LAPD officials estimated the per capita crime rate last year was 290 for every 10,000 people. In 1956, when the city had 1.9 million fewer residents, the rate was 385 per 10,000.

The Watts area alone last year saw a nearly 50% drop in homicides, according to LAPD crime statistics.

Bratton said gang killings still account for 54% of the city's homicides. But progress can be made in this area, he said.

"Gang crime or gang-influenced crime is where it is at in this city like nowhere else in the nation."

It seems like if you are not part of a gang, you should not be too worried. I've lived here for over 10 years, and I've never felt threatened.
I feel pretty safe in LA, even when I drive through some of the worst parts of it.

Per the topic of this thread "Black Latino tension and gangs" -- what I have seen is that some Latinos are not nuts about working with blacks, mostly because Latinos see Blacks as lazy. Not for any other reason. (This is from working on a job together, not from anything else.) If a black person proves they are a hustler, then the latinos like them. Color means nothing.

I'm sure it's probably the same in areas black and latinos live in. If the blacks and latinos are all agreeable, then I doubt any tension exists.

People seem to be trying to invent some sort of general black/latino tension that doesn't really exist. I don't see the "race war" thing happening.

I'm black and haven't experienced any NEGATIVE problems with latinos. Ever.

That is all.

People have been predicting a "race war" with blacks for YEARS. First it was with whites, now it's with Mexicans.

Believe me when I tell you as a black person - We are NOT thinking about having any "race war". We're too busy just trying to survive.

That race crap is reserved for the California Prison system.

It's not as bad as they're making it out to be and there also underlying factors that the press fails to mention as well.

For one, many of these "mexicans" are probably just released prison gangmembers that are taking their penal segregation mentality on the STREETS of LA. They've been locked up for so long that instead of adopting to a "normal" way of life, they bring their outdated and dangerous prison living ways to whatever neighborhoods they move to.

This is what was told to me by a couple of cops I talked to. The mexicans don't mess with REAL black gangmembers, instead they fool with "civilians". They don't want a real gang war.

Black-Latino violence? I'm still waiting for the Black-Asian and Black-White violence to subside. Blacks sure seem to have difficulties with other people.

For someone who's always whining about their contempt for interracial relationships, "she" certainly likes following you around, L.A. Fan. Weaseling "her" way into every post you start.

Looks like someone's got a crush on you!

Do I hear wedding bells? Guess who's coming to dinner?
