The most scenic would be to take PCH all the way up to Santa Barbara, but it would take you forever and a day. On freeway you are looking at at least 2+hours of driving.

My parents used to live in Riverside and I used to drive from Burbank to Riverside all the time. It's over an hour without traffic. (I just looked on the internet and, right now, it's a 2 1/2 hour drive from Burbank to Riverside).

From Burbank to Santa Barbara, it's over 2 hours on a weekend. So, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that it's going to take over 3 hours to get from Riverside to Santa Barbara. (Actually, I just plugged in Riverside to Santa Barbara and it says 3.22 minutes or 3.52 minutes, depending on how you go.)

Riverside to Malibu is 85 miles and Google is showing a 2+ hour trip right now.

Uh oh, Malibu to Riverside is the same 85 miles -- but it will take 3 1/2 hours to do!!!!!

If you want to go to the beach on Saturday, I'd strongly suggest you look at the Orange County beaches. They are nice too and a lot of them are known for their surfing like Newport Beach and Huntington Beach. There's lots to do in the OC!

So for Sunday - leaving Riverside to head towards Santa Barbara, what would traffic look like? What time would be best to leave and avoid traffic? 10-11am?

Are you going back to Riverside Sunday night?

The only time without traffic is the middle of the night.

If you leave Riverside at 10 a.m., you'll be getting into Santa Barbara around 2 p.m. -- if you don't hit any accidents, etc.

Let's say I do the two following trips:

-Riverside to Malibu on a Saturday
-Riverside to Santa Barbara on a Sunday

What would traffic patterns be then? I realize it's weekend days for both trips, but I'm really not sure about L.A., and I've heard so many nightmarish stories about getting stuck in traffic. Also, what times would you recommend for travel, to avoid traffic?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
-Riverside to Malibu on a Saturday -> Could be sort of congested in places.

-Riverside to Santa Barbara on a Sunday -> Contra the flow especially later in the day.

The later the better, especially for the latter portion of the journey. Very few people would be heading West late on a Sunday, most would be people returning to Ventura and SB counties after a day trip into LA. But those areas are just not that populated. Vs the masses returning into LA from all points outside.

Can you clarify what you meant by contra? Also, what would traffic generally be like at around 10am on Sunday leaving Riverside west to SB?

Andy,

Why don't you look at that Sigalert website I posted the link to above? Just take a look tomorrow and see if the lanes are all green.

I look at the road to Malibu today and I was surprised that the 10 is actually just as congested on a Saturday as it is on weekdays. Right now (3:40 p.m.) it's solid red on the 10 from the beach to downtown (if you were heading back from Malibu right now).

That website covers all the freeways from Riverside to Santa Barbara.
