hi everybody,

i'm trying to wrap my head around the metro system; i've seen both 24-hour bus lines referred to (specifically in hollywood, where i am thinking of living) but also people mention "owl" lines. are these the same thing? even reading this article specifically about owl lines i'm not sure if there is a true difference or it is just local jargon:

The 24-Hour City: 104 Years Of Owl Transit Service In Los Angeles | Metro's Primary Resources

Native Angeleno here and I've never heard of it. BTW, in El A is not always safe to ride the bus, especially at night and in an area like Hollywood.

Some routes remain the same as a normal route like the 92, 180/181 and 105.

A lot of the Owl/24 hour bus go on modified routes. They combine with routes that are not 24 hours but also try to connect to other 24 hour lines, so you can finish your connections.
For example the #20 bus usually ends in Westwood normally, but the owl bus goes all the way to Santa Monica beach (which the 720 or Big Blue Bus would normally do)

The same for the #4 bus that ends around the 405fwy but continues to Santa Monica.

The #10 bus usually goes on Melrose to Downtown LA, but the modified bus goes down to Vermont instead to Bev/Vermont Station where you can catch the #14 bus which is a normal 24 bus.

The #2 bus is modified I think, even on a different route for most of it.

It's always safe to ride the bus. Late at night you just get a bunch of homeless people trying to sleep and some drunks. I know from experience. The craziest stuff actually happens during broad daylight.

I think the terms 24 hour and OWL are interchangeable. On Metro's website metro.net, they name it "24-hour Owl Service". Youll need to check out the maps and schedules for each night bus and see where they go whether the regular route or a modified one. I think a lot of people just call it the night bus or "There is a night bus? I didnt know that"

Yeah. The one I've used is the #37, which is Downtown to near Culver City. During the day, it is a regular route running down Adams Blvd. But after midnight, the Owl service is where the #37 and #38 combine into a weird loop.
