It's been some years since I've been to the Southland. I'm looking into the best places to stay around L.A. and which flights (cheapest)? Whether to fly into LAX or John Wayne? My trip is quasi-business, as I'm going to be spending a lot of time in Glendale and Westwood. Being that the city's changed in the last several years, what's the list of "good" areas and the stay-away-from areas? I do know to stay away from the Hollywood area after sundown; I'll only be there during the day. I plan to be no more than 3-4 days in L.A. I'm seeking the cheapest, inexpensive lodging available.

Where are you coming from? In addition to LAX and John Wayne, Burbank might also be an option given you will be in Glendale. Long Beach is also an option if you are flying in on Jet Blue. In general the Westside is safe. For good value housing you might research Koreatown.

I'd seriously just fly into LAX. What's the closest airport in Jersey to you? If you're close to NYC, then the JFK-LAX route is super competitive and you can find a good price. Look into JetBlue. If not, just search online for airfare from your closest airport to LAX. Also, this is the first I've heard about staying away from Hollywood at night.

Hey Rick, is that really you? HaHa. Just kidding.

When was the last time you were in LA?

I'm closest to Newark Airport. I was trying to avoid the long ride to JFK but I'm told that it's cheaper to fly out of there. I'm also looking for the most inexpensive lodging also. I used to stay with a relative who lived in L.A. but he moved away after he retired from his job.

Ok, that explains your reference to staying out of Hollywood after night fall.

Two big changes in the city since your last visit: the resurgence of Hollywood and Downtown LA. Still on the seedy side in places but both are vastly improved from what they were back in the 90's. Both are worth a visit if you are into urban places. If not and you are more a beach guy than just stick to the beaches and have a good time.

Jet Blue from New York Metro to Long Beach used to be a seriously good deal. Not sure about nowadays. I encourage you to check it out. All you need to do then is rent a car as you would want one in El A anyway. Set it up with Enterprise as they are very cheap.
