1) Most residential streets in Mexican border towns aren't even paved. So you must've only seen the "nice" touristy parts

2) Mexico is not even close to being a third world country.

This is in South Los Angeles

So is this

This is in Nogales, Mexico. There isn't much difference.

Anyone who has been to Nogales knows that it is a festering toilet, the picture above of South LA almost look better. Don't get me wrong, I love this city with all of my heart but denying the fact that some areas are essentially unfit for humans, or at least people who care about living in a nice place, won't do anything to fix it.

Anyone can find bad pictures of south la and good pictures of Mexico. I can easily google the opposite of what youre showing. Besides i don't even see what is bad about the second photo.
They're walking in an ally, in pajamas, they seem pretty comfortable/safe lol.
The alley ways behind Melrose are much much worse.

Regarding those videos showing the shootouts on LA freeways in the 1990s -- you realize that cellphones didn't have video cameras until after 2004, right? So there was no way for the average person to document anything with video. In fact, in the 1990s, most cellphones didn't even have cameras.

I think they are from traffic cams or the cameras in police cars, are you saying that video technology wasn't available back then? If so how can I watch hours of footage of the riots? Which also took place in that area?

The footage from the riots was from news people. All the TV stations had camera people in the area. Some people had video cameras but they were large and expensive at the time. Police cars didn't have video. I don't remember traffic cameras being around back then either.

Digital cameras didn't come out until the late 1990s. I bought a digital camera in 1998 for $700. It took still pictures, no video.

Here's the history of the camcorder: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camcorder Check out the size. There's no way some casual person could catch video of any "car to car shootouts" on the freeway.

Wow...

As the original poster I had no idea I was opening up a can of worms. Home camcorders were fairly common in the mid 90s, kids. There was a time, not so long ago, without cell phone cameras, too.

The area I'm looking at, really is border line. I'm a few blocks away from the 10 and downtown Culver City... I'm definitely not in the heart of the ghetto but I agree with the fact that it's definitely has some improving to do. Even in the heart of the crime in the 80s and 90s, I would doubt this area was anything like places 5 miles south east of where I'm taking about..

Again, I'm open to other areas... so throw some ideas at me!

Where could I buy that I would have:
a) a commute no longer than 30 minutes in the rush hour to Olympic / Bundy,
b) at least a 2 bed / 2 ba house,
c) price range of $500k - $700k

To the poster who suggested Echo Park, that would take an hour+ each way on the 10 in the morning & afternoon to get to work / home... no thanks.
