East Hollywood questions
I just got an apartment on N. Berendo St., south of Sunset, sort of behind that big Scientology center. I wanted to be close to the metro and areas I couldn't afford -- Los Feliz, Silver Lake. The Sunset/Vermont red line is a block or two away and I walked up Vermont to Los Feliz in less than 5 min.
Does anybody know this area? Are a lot of other people who are priced out of Silver Lake and Los Feliz moving there?
It seems ok and pretty safe, maybe even on the improving side. My only concerns are street parking and my girlfriend walking our dog at night.

I live nearby. It's a somewhat gritty area. Working class, ethnically mixed. You're a short drive from a whole lot of things. Police helicopters at 3 a.m. are not uncommon. If your girlfriend is walking a BIG dog, she should be OK, but you might want to go along with her a couple of times to check out the route.

Hello! I have a similar question. I am considering putting a despoit down on an apartment that is located Virgil Ave at Melrose in East Hollywood. Can anyone help me understand whether or not this area is relatively safe?

These places are inexpensive for a reason.

My sister lives on N. Catalina St. right next to the Scientology Center and loves it. I visit frequently and have never encountered any problems.

I work on Hillhurst. All the hospitals around your area (just south of us) have been a big help to the area. Yes up and coming.
Silver Lake and Los Feliz are already starting back up. They didnt feel the downturn as much as the suburbs. The folks I know who want to live in the Hollywood Hills, often go to Silver Lake because it is affordable.
As long as you feel safe and act smart you'll likely be fine.
As for shopping Jon's Market (Vermont 1 blk above Sunset) is a GREAT source of affordable produce and cheap Vodka (dont ask).
And thanks for using the subway. A model citizen you are. I cannot use it in my line of work but it is a nice one and we use it to go downtown.
best regards,

Ahh..East Hollywood, or EHO as I call it, is quite an interesting place. Diverse as hell (Mexicans, Salvadoreans, Guatemalans, Russians, Ukrainians, Armenians, Thai, (white) Yuppies and even Hipsters), rich in culture and flavor, has some nice architecture and the coveted "gritty" feel with plenty of street food and vibrancy.
It's location is amazing too..using my trusted bike/Metro combo, you're really never too far away from anything. From some parts, Silverlake/Los Feliz are walkable, and Union Station is a 12-minute subway ride. Oh, and Zankou's, the taco truck at the abandoned gas station on the 101/Western, Scoops and Sanamluang are all amazing, too. With all of that going for it, I kind of wonder how come it didn't gentrify more during this last real estate cycle..not that I want it to, of course -- just sayin'.
There are some gangs over there, however, namely MS-13 and the like. Though, as with most cases, if you don't go around looking for trouble, you'll be fine the vast majority of the the time. All sorts of transient-types in the later hours of the night, too.

Dude, you can find those things in most LA neighborhoods, even those that are -- or have been -- gentrified. You, too, should know that in LA, neighborhoods vary from block-to-block. Like I've said, I know people who live there and have had no problems...keep to yourself, treat others how you would like to be treated, you'll be fine. These are things you just have to deal with when living in urban, inner-city areas.

Speaking of EHO, I took some pics and wrote a blog post about it:
