A beer is going to run you about £2.50 at the current exchange rate, plus tip. So with tip it's the same price. If you drink a mixed drink, or a martini, it will be £5+, plus tip. It is pretty expensive to drink here. My recommendation would be to buy drinks at a store and drink some before you go out. It will save you a lot of money.

Also, most clubs don't get crowded until between 10-11 pm, and by law they have to stop serving alcohol by 1:30 am. So you only have a few hours to drink. Very odd law in my opinion. The clubs/bars close by 2 am.

sounds the same as here then.
most clubs fill at around half 10-11pm, bars stop serving drink around 1am, with the majority of the bars closing completely between 1am and 1:30. so its not a great difference from home. drink is getting more and more expensive here - a west coast cooler and cherry brandy (try it - awesome) is around £6.
most people drink at home before heading out, but if the bouncers smell alchohol on your breath chances are you wont get in. lol.

which is a big ask - but im getting alot of different ideas from everyone, so whats your opinion?
if you're still trying to decide between the beach and not-the-beach, my preference would be the latter unless you are certain that you will put on your bathing suit and get sand in your toes at least three days a week. if like many of us here, you visit the "beach" fully clothed and don't go anywhere near the sand, much less the water, then i don't think it's worth the convenience you'll be sacrificing by not choosing a more central location. hollywood/west hollywood will offer a lot to see and do, some of it within walking distance unless you're up in the hills. westwood (near UCLA) is another youth-oriented part of town, which might be less exciting than usual when school is out of session, but that also makes it a great place to find an apartment to sublet for the summer.

That's interesting. That hasn't been my experience at all. And most people who have posted about Craigslist in the past have had a pretty positive experience with it from what I've read.

for that reason, i probably suggested it a time or two, but that was before i actually used it to help a friend look for an apartment and some second-hand household items. about 70% of the apartment listings i contacted never responded to the messages i left, and a fair number had voicemail boxes that were still full two or three days later. i consider that an indication that i was dealing with unprofessional property managers, and there were just too many of them concentrated on that site for me to recommend it to someone else in good conscience. i love the concept, though.

hey there everyone.
iv checked craigslist, some people seem a bit unsure of how reliable it is whilst others tell me its ok. so il see how it goes.
we have noticed that l.a is incredibly expensive, and im unsure if we can afford it. we have been looking into staying in florida...though im a bit undecided as i feel that l.a has alot more to it? L.A is more than just disney if that makes sense. i duno. its hard to decide?
id love to see the things that everyone knows l.a for - but i dont know if i could afford to stay there...nor do i really know where to stay despite extensive research.
the traffic is worrying and offputting.... all i hear is traffic traffic traffic lol im sure its js as bad as in florida though. everywhere has its good and bad points.
can anyone help me decide which we should go for?

I have no idea. I would recommend doing the same thing over on the Florida board and see what kind of info you'll get there. I would imagine it will depend where you go. South Beach is just as expensive as LA I think, for example. Just look around and see what you find.

Check out Craigslist.org under sublet section. If you end up going to a hostel, the one in Hermosa is pretty cool.
