I'm thinking the OP may be able to find a 2-bedroom apartment in the $2,000-2,400 range in either Inglewood, Hawthorne, Lawndale or Carson, all of which are reasonably close to the beach.

Also, I'm in my 20's, and it'd be good to live around people my age too. moneywise, I can afford about $1600/month for rent.

btw, I've read some of these posts on LA, and it seems like everyone thinks the crime is pretty bad. I've been living in Chicago for the past five years, and haven't had any problems (didn't live in the best area either).. and from the research I've done, Chicago has way more reported crimes than LA each year.. So, is there anyone who's lived in both Chicago and LA and can tell me how their experiences with crime compared in both cities?

thanks a lot for your help!
Just live in El Segundo...you are in a lucky situation. El Segundo has young professionals and if you want to do the bar thing, then Manhattan Beach is adjacent. Why bother driving around LAX to live in Westchester? I think you should be able to find a 1 bedroom apt for $1600 in El Segundo. It might not be the fanciest place at that price, but still a roof over your head.

CRIME in El Segundo is not bad! El Segundo has Whole Foods, Soul Cycle, Trader Joes. It is about as Yuppie as it comes now.

OP should buy a house in Hawthorne or Lawndale. He could make mortgage payments with that budget instead of renting. He will thank us in 5-7 years because it is California real estate after all.

Meandtoby327, as well as the suggestions of Westchester, Hawthorne etc, you can also find decent 2bedroom apartments for $2100 in Palms and West LA, and sometimes in Culver City and Mar Vista.
