Hi, I am moving from Northern California to Southern California to work for this company in downtown LA. I am looking for a place halfway between LA and Orange County. I am looking for a one bedroom one bath apartment/studio in a safe area in the 1300 price range. Most of my friends currently resides in the Irvine area and I would commute there over the weekend. Can you give me some areas where I can start performing some research?

Montery Park is a good choice for you. Its closer to DT El A than it is to the OC but you are only going to the OC on weekends so its practical to live closer to DT El A than to Irvine. Given other data points including your surname and mention of socializing with people who reside in Irvine, MPK is the perfect choice for you.

I believe Fullerton has a commuter rail station, and trains go all the way to LA Downtown. Might be convenient alternative to the car commute.
