I'd be fine with Sherman Oaks or Culver City on that salary, personally.

...are you paying 55%+ in taxes? Your post is ambiguous so I can't tell what you're saying.

I'd live in the Flats of Beverly Hills, north of Smb and South of Sunset, on Bedford or one of the Palm tree lined streets. Although 300k a year probably wouldn't afford me that. In that case I'd be happy living in a home in Central Weho by city hall like on La Jolla or Harper.

Venice Beach comes with lots of homeless people.

True, I'm sure most people that are buying places in L.A today make less than 300k a year.

A house just anywhere in LA sure... a house in certain areas, it's tough.

Ventura or Orange County, better services for your money and generally a better class of people. If you must be in LA, maybe one of those small exclusive cities like Hidden Hills, Calabasas, Topanga, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills or the Beach Cities. I am a homeowner in West LA and services are abysmal. Police service sucks, roads suck, bad schools, just bad bad bad.

Yeah I agree, L.A city services are pretty subpar considering the cost of homes. City is too big. If you are in one of the more expensive parts of L.A though you can avoid some of this...but not all of it.
Brentwood for example they have private security patrolling all the time basically , so while it's not a gated community , it kind of is. You are talking crazy amounts of money though to live in that environment.
In terms of city of L.A , I'd take Studio City/Sherman Oaks over Brentwood though . Those homes South of Ventura Blvd are just as nice or nicer than Brentwood..and the shopping/dining is a lot more exciting..and there isn't the parking lot that is Sunset Blvd right there too.
