Based on my experience, Smart & Final is the only "cheap" place on your list. All the others are pretty expensive. But again, it just depends on what you buy.
Trader Joe's isn't expensive.

Whole Foods - or "Whole Paycheck" - is amongst the most expensive stores around. I never go there except to occasionally have a sandwich when I feel like splurging slightly, as they do make good sandwiches. (The closest one to me is in Mar Vista) But I'd never buy anything else there.

I think Whole Foods is outrageously high on a lot of things I buy. In particular, I like to buy seafood. They have good quality seafood but it's often 3X to 10X the price it is anywhere else.

There is a good seafood market in Glendale -- King Seafood? It's on Glendale Avenue, a few blocks from Whole Foods in Glendale. It has "significantly" lower prices than Whole Foods. Also, Costco is great for seafood.

I really like Whole Foods. I know the prices are higher but they really do tend to have better quality stuff than other markets. Plus, they ALWAYS have all of their checkstands open. I hate hate hate waiting in long lines at the market. The have the best cuts on meats and their chili is amazing.

CaliforniaDreamin' is on a distinguished road
I buy a few things at Whole Foods in NYC and I found the prices for the items I buy to be the same or lower than at other supermarkets. I don't do all my food shopping there and I don't buy seafood, meats or any specialty items but cereal, yogurt, veggie burgers etc are all the same price or less than conventional supermarkets. LOVE that place
