As much as I love LA and plan to move there, the city should be ashamed of itself for having Skid Row.
Since you think the city should be ashamed of the area, what do you propose the city does with all the people that live there? It's very easy to criticize but when you offer no solutions it's pretty vacuous.

What about you Mr/Mrs know it all kumbaya? What is your solution for skid row? I'm not a sociologist or anthropologist, and I highly doubt you are too. I have ideas just like everyone else.

Yup, you win! Two times in one day, while running errands walking down LA streets (separate times), I had the unfortunate sighting(s) of transients doing their business on the sidewalk. Although the first incident - he was on the sidewalk of my job

I have never seen skid row but I am familiar with the garment district. Back in the early 80's we use to walk the area and walking over drunks whose bodies were spread out on the side walk. Also, lots of panhandling. My credit card number was stolen.

Statistics reveal that a high percentage of homeless people are mentally ill and many are not on medication to treat their illness so they revert to drugs and alcohol. Ronald Reagan was the worst President we ever had and our economy is still suffering from the whirlwind of Reagonomics.

There are solutions to resolve this situation but the fix would cost money. For some reason the public doesn't mind paying for the war for profit machine but to help those who are unable to help them selves I hear "it is their problem they do not have the initiative to help their selves and so screw them". And I get it but people who are mentally ill are incapable of helping their selves. We as a society can build prisons for profit and not bat a eye, we pull out our wallet and are happy to pay the costs. Yet, when it comes to the mentally ill or people who are addicted, we allow them to live on the streets and fend for them selves. If prisoners were under such conditions, they would get a lawyer and sue the Penal System.

United States is rapidly becoming a second world country.

I'm not the one criticizing the city and saying they should do something about it, now am I? If you have ideas like everyone else, please share them.

I don't have to come up with a solution, maybe I think it should be left the way it is. It's been that way for years, but not until recently have people started to care due to rents in Dtla increasing and the new residents not wanting to put up with drug addicts, nut jobs, and prostitutes.

I just find it ironic that you think the city of LA should be ashamed of skid row when it's the one on the hook and paying for a vast majority of the homeless population in LA county and probably a significant part of socal. How about all the nearby suburbs that routinely dump their homeless is skid row? That seems a lot more shameful to me.

Oh, please.

What are these solutions that you speak of? You can't fix crazy and you sure as hell can't make a druggie quit unless they want to quit, and if sleeping in a cardboard box getting pi**ed on by stray dogs isn't enough to make you want to quit then there's no hope for you.

How much money needs to be thrown at these people to make them well and why should MY hard-earned money go to help some stranger who WILLINGLY CHOSE the path that they are on. I didn't stick the needle in their arm. Their lifestyle has consequences. Boo hoo for them.

Life lesson: Don't be a druggie.

?? You know most homeless have a few screws loose, right? If there were tons of money to be spent on mental Healthcare, then the vast majority of the homeless would be put in mental institutes receiving professional help. This is not the done now because it's wayyyyy too expensive.

I used to think that "skid row" was like a quarter of a block, but then I heard that it's a HUGE area. I think downtown LA is a dump as well as a traffic and parking nightmare. I don't go there unless I have to.

Yes, I know that most homeless have a few screws loose. Many of those have loosed their screws thanks to drug use. In any event, what will mental healthcare help? Throwing money into mental healthcare is a recipe for abuse, both of the patients and of the system. It's a money pit that'll solve few if any problems for these people. Sometimes you have to accept the fact that you can't help everybody.
