Hi
I think Sherman Oaks would be a big mistake! My husband and I moved here from Manhattan, first to Beachwood Canyon (great) then Sherman Oaks because we could afford a bigger place. Sherman Oaks is so boring. There are only a few bars, no atmosphere. There are some nice restaurants, sure, but nothing unusual or interesting or lively. We are leaving after two years because we felt it is more of a retiree place or perfect if you have kids. There are lots of 'mommy and me' kids activities. Coming from London to here would be a mistake. You will love the weather and sitting in the sun in your back garden but that becomes boring after a while and you'll be seeking life. I would go to Santa Monica or Los Feliz.

When I visited my friend in Sherman Oaks there weren't many places for us to go out to either. There were a couple bars on Ventura but they seemed to be closed pretty early. We went to Big Wangs which was fun, I don't remember if that was in SO or closer to Hollywood?

As for the Valley and what's up with it, the stereotype is that it is full of dumb blondes (for Valley girls read Essex girls). If this was ever true, it isn't any more. It has its drawbacks, like high heat in the summer. But I wouldn't worry about stigma. Angelenos are not a snobbish lot, by and large--perhaps because so much of the vanity and social one-upmanship is concentrated in the film business. And neighbourhoods can change so quickly that reputations tend not to stick.
Ah. Great point! I suppose suburbs is subjective. I'm a mid-west native so to me the valley is built up and city-like.

Ditto on the air conditioning. I would hardly call AC in the valley a guilty pleasure when the mercury tops 100 degrees and there is absolutely zero air movement. Lived there for 5 years so glad to be on the Coast now with more moderate temperatures.

You'd live there even though the original poster stated the job was in Calabasas?

No way.
