If you complain about SoCal now, you won't be able to complain about Texas later after you have moved there for your $50k job.

You will just have to suck it up and pretend to like Texas.

I suggest just letting this thread get buried.

Are you mid career, experienced, and trying to find a job? These people are offering $18 to $25 an hour and expecting the world of you. Those are Midwest wages. In CA! Who can pay for a house, utilities, car, insurance, etc on that wage? And that's with a degree in a technical field.

The gas prices, car registration and insurance, sales tax, and high rent are unbearable. And the way these employers are acting these days is reprehensible. You can only use the weather excuse so long. Eventually you have to move on, to a cheaper city, and have a better life.
See ya later bye!

Dude (or Dudette), I feel your pain. You're not the only one who wishes not to be here. This ain't the place it used to be.

Were I to have it my way, I'd move to greener cooler "northier" affordable-er sparsely populated pastures elsewhere "where life is beautiful all the time." Heck! Who knows. I might still be able to escape from SoCal after a change in a certain set of circumstances. Until such undetermined time, I may as well make the best of where I'm at by enjoying the day-to-day experiences as best as possible. After all, it's not like we're living in some really F_ucked up S_hit hole place where we're dodging bullets, landmines, and trying not to get beheaded.

I mean, come on man, we have beautiful sunsets, pretty girls in all shapes, shades, races, colors and flavors, nice beaches [during the week], diverse foods, an ample supply of good wine, and on, and on.

So, with all that being written, just ease up dude . . . and enjoy the ride.

have you lived anywhere besides CA?). Try educating yourself. I have something to compare it to as I have lived in a few states.
yes I have, and it sounds like FL sucks.

Yes, I agree it is cheaper to live in TX and AZ. And I'm sorry if you got laid off.

I would suggest you take one of those offers and go to TX or AZ if you can't find a replacement job in your former salary range in CA. In your situation that might be what is best for you.

Good luck.
Pretty much. And thank you.

You can only ride that statement so far. None of that matters if someone doesn't have any money to go out.

Here's a good example. Elon Musk is paying his guys in Reno an average wage of $25/hr at his new gigafactory. That's more than the $17 they get at Testa in SF, and the $22 you get at SpaceX in Hawthorne. And there is no state income tax in Nevada.

That puts you right in line to own a nice average home, good neighborhood, etc

You can't do that in SoCal on average wages.

There's only two options .
Stay or leave .
Sounds like you've located some affordable markets and if you want to be a homeowner especially it makes sense to move.

Things will likely get even more expensive here at least that's the way they are trending.
And even if prices dropped they won't drop by much . Even if prices dropped a lot tons of people still wouldn't be able to buy a house here .

A lot of people seem to be realize they might never be able to afford a home in LA , several articles on here were posted about it from LA magazine and some other places .

It will be interesting if people make a move and take action or if they will still be talking about it .
Waiting around for the government to build affordable housing is a bad idea . I've heard la politicians say this but in reality if they do it it's only going to help a very tiny amount of people .
It's just the mayor and others have to talk about " doing something about affordable housing " for the people of LA , but talk isn't doing anything .
Having meetings , discussions and studying things doesn't help anyone .

I say vote with your feet and keep the option of moving back when you make some good money and have good savings .

I don't think LA's is necessarily that expensive.

It's just that on average wages people can't live a certain lifestyle that they think of as a standard lifestyle.

I also think the middle class label is inaccurately applied. Middle class used to mean small business owners or professionals. Now every working person would like to believe that they are middle class (when they are POOR). Once nice thing about So. Cal is that it confronts you with reality. Want to live fabulously. You can if you have the MONEY!

There are people who move into LA who have wealthy parents who support them.

Many of those people who make it big in Hollywood had parents to pay for acting lessons, headshots, film school, university educations, etc.

It's not an even playing field by any means.

If I moved to California, let's just say at this point I wouldn't have to wor in starbucks or do porn and I am already quite familiar with living in a big expensive city.

Yeah I have heard that is why politicians always want to talk about the middle class .
The poor want to think they are middle class or aspire to it and the rich often don't admit they are rich .
I just saw this article . Apparently Hillary is focusing her campaign on raising middle class wages.

I don't really see how that's possible . It mentions she wants to raise the minimum wage but min wage earners have never been considered middle class.. Maybe now they are?

I agree that SoCal is probably the best place if you have a lot of money . Some people say anywhere is nice if you are rich but I don't think that's true .
The options for housing, shopping , entertainment , services and amenities for the rich are outstanding .
Plus a supply of cheap labor - often immigrants .
You can't really find all those things in other cities .
Sure people will say NYC but if you want to live in the city near the action even if you are a billionaire your only choices are apartments or condos .

You do have big houses in NYC proper in the outer boroughs. It's Manhattan that just has apartment buildings. But even in Manhattan some brownstones have backyards so if you want a building with a yard you can find that in parts of the Lower East Side, West Village,Chelsea, and Harlem.

Also billionaires in NYC often have multiple properties. You can have the condo in NYC and the house in the suburbs or upstate. Meanwhile all your other amenities are right there.
