4 years ago my family and i moved into a 3 bedroom 2 bath house. Recently our landlord got cited by the city do to illigal garage converted. our child is now without a room liveing in my livingroom. so technically we are renting a 2 bedroom 1 bath but paying for a 3 + 2. the landlord wont lower the rent. is it legal for our landlord to do this?

Did the landlord undid the conversion and is it actually a garage now? Is there anything that prevents your son to continue to live in his room?

If the answer is yes, then - well, he broke the contract first. If not, then you agreed to pay your rent for that particular house as it is, the fact that landlord got ticketed for something is not relevant to your enjoyment of it.

There is no such thing as "tenents" rights. Although there are tenants' rights.
