To all of the people in L.A. who say they're leaving California because of traffic: Do you realize that there are other cities in California besides Los Angeles?
I don't understand the one-dimensional thinking.

I've lived in La forever, but I'm not closedminded. I know of the beauties out there and I will most certainly move out. the only think I'm going to miss is the nightlife and the ambience of it. So much to do here. So I might end up in a small city that is still within grasp of LA. I do hate the rest, like costs, neighbors etc.

I actually dont mind the traffic. I think people who do is because they get there late. But I always leave myself plenty of time... so it doesn't bother me. Heck its alot safer than driving around 80 miles an hour with no traffic.

Yes, of course there are other cities in this state besides Los Angeles but I can understand why people are leaving. The cost to live in CA is much too high now and the state is so broke that it cannot even pay its bills. In 1983 when I first arrived, someone could work a job that was paying $12 an hour and live pretty well. But not anymore.
This is certainly NOT one dimensional thinking. It is actually called realizing and accepting the reality that CA has too much traffic because there are too many people living here. If I could leave now, I would but I have to stay for reasons beyond my control. So I will deal with it and manage somehow. California is a nice state but it has a lot of problems now unfortunately. Everything WILL turn around eventually because nothing lasts forever.

That doesn't make sense. Most of California is very sparsely populated. Sure, it could be argued that there are "too many people" living in L.A., but I think there's a lot more to California than Los Angeles. My impression is that many of the people living there believe that California ends at the borders of Los Angeles County.

I used to do that too, until I got sick of leaving 90 minutes early for work 22 miles away.

Do the same people believe that NY city is over-populated as well?
How about you just admit your indifference to urban environments.

Point of fact: Humidity doesn't spray paint on walls, sell drugs on the street corner, offer to put your 12 year old daughter in a sex movie, etc. etc. etc. (I'll just have to lather up on "Bug Off" and carry a fly swatter I guess. Not a bad trade off.)

All the things you are looking for are in Tokyo (well, okay, not much grass there and it gets awfully humid and rainy during the summer). There is little crime (even though the cops in Japan aren't as good as the ones in the U.S.---not by a longshot) and the city is amazingly clean. Guns are banned, so there are only about 1200 murders in the ENTIRE COUNTRY of Japan in a year. And drugs are NOT COOL there, even among the young (even with a big hidden problem of addiction to speed and alcohol) like it is in the U.S.
Of course, you will have to live in a small apartment or house for way too much money (kinda like NYC or L.A.), but securitywise Tokyo rocks and Japanese have tremendous family values and are arguably the most educated and literate people on the planet.

Sure there are. And there are plenty of other states in the union, too!
Well, for me, I really only moved to L.A. to work in entertainment. When I had done all I set out to do and got burned out and tired of it, I decided it was time to get out of L.A. for good. To me, there was no point in staying in the city if I wasn't going to be working in entertainment. I didn't move to L.A. for CA, I moved to L.A. for work opportunities. I'm not that enamoured of the state of CA as a whole!

Pacificop: That was quite a rant! I think I kinda get where you're coming from. My mom can't fathom why I don't live in CA anymore. She spent about 18 years in Huntington Park then got to move to a nice little niche in Downey, surrounded by the LA county mayhem you describe. She has blinders on & she's very happy that way.
I think people who have a comfortable routine & feel relatively safe in their established realm deserve the happiness they perceive. I wish my mom would see it my way & at least visit me in Oregon, but she just can't even begin to imagine how to travel over that state border to somewhere she heard is too wet & cold. So we just stay in our respective corners. She can afford her blinders.
People do things in their own time when they're ready. Like you're retiring & making a change you expect to bring contentment. It's amazing you could generate 39 pages of responses to something so elegantly simple.
The problem with leaving LA is that it has so many fond memories & it has so many charming amenities that make a person grateful. I left but I'm always looking back over my shoulder to remember what I left behind.
I would be curious as to whether you think you could find what you're looking for in a place where gun ownership is banned *quizzical smile*
Arcata could have what you're looking for, if you can relax in a hippy town. Personally, I'm conservative on many issues, but I love being around liberals when they aren't complaining about conservatives! Or maybe Pleasant Hill, in Oregon would be a place worth your visit.
Best wishes in your retirement - Kate
