Default Good parts of South Central L.A.

Hi all, I am a 24 year old black male moving to L.A. to take a job in the downtown area. As a result, I am looking for a place that is safe, affordable, and has a significant black population. Now, I know that South Central has a bad reputation due to rap artists like NWA/Dr. Dre as well as movies such as Boyz in the Hood. However, South Central is a huge area and I am smart enough to know that every area has good and bad parts. As a result, I wanted to ask if you guys could please tell me, which parts of South Central L.A. do you guys think I could live in which I would not have to worry about being the victim of a crime/violence? Thanks

You have got to be kidding me. Since this is your first post I take what you write with a grain of salt and am assuming that you are more likely "trolling" as opposed to being sincere about wanting to move there but I'll answer anyway.

South Central LA as well as Watts and Compton no longer have a "significant" black population as they are now majority hispanic. Still, there is LOTS of crime in those areas and I would highly advise you consider moving elsewhere (Gardena, Torrance, Miracle Mile, Koreatown, etc.). South Central is a place with very few supermarkets, very few restaraunts (there are fried chicken and mexican food places on each corner), no Starbucks, no movie theaters, no shopping malls.

Hey 49ersfan. I, on the other hand, am taking your post at face value.

Not knowing your budget, I'd suggest that you look into Ladera Heights and Fox Hills areas. These are large, upscale communities with a large black population. Steer clear of South Central. Even if there are pockets of reasonable areas (and I don't know if any) you'll likely have to travel through the very bad areas often. It's not that all of the people in South Central are bad people, but they're held hostage by the gangs that are prevalent in the area. Good Luck.

I don't think you wanna stay in South Central for very long. There are several communities in L.A. outside South L.A., like Westchester, parts of Venice. Don't you want to live in a diversed area?

There are some safer areas of South Central, but as someone from out of town I would look into other areas.Parts of Gardena near redondo beach blvd is a nice area and relatively inexspensive and a straight shot downtown on the 110.Inglewood between manchester and century near crenshaw it also a an okay area and not to far from downtown. If you give an idea of your budget I can better assist you.You are right an entire area is not completely unsafe and most will have you believe.

It's not South Central LA anymore, it's South LA. The Baldwin Hills area is one that has many good homes and a strong sense of community. Upper middle class black families make it their home but it's not an ostentatious kind of wealth. It's not perfectly safe but it's not the gang pit that those who don't live there tend to think. Seriously, if you want to live in that area and are black and want to live somewhere that has a strong community feel and committment then you should look into that area. There are a lot of apartments along Stocker Street between La Brea and Crenshaw. There are very nice homes in the winding streets in the hills leading out of Stocker and La Brea area. If you go immediately south and west you're in Culver City and that is also a very upper middle class area with many great homes. If you go immediately south you are in a much more working and middle class area but the gang issues are heavy there. If you go north and/or east you are in a working class/impoverished area and you don't want to be there. It's a narrow stretch through there that is desirable, but educated black people who care deeply about maintaining a strong educated black community in LA, people who could live in other areas quite easily, have chosen to remain in Baldwin Hills and live a very good life there. I work with quite a few of these people and drive through that area frequently and I have always been quite impressed with the area and the people in it.

Perhaps you should check out north pasadena or west Altadena. Both areas have large african-american populations. The crime rate is a little high, but lower than most of south central. Plus, it's quite close to downtown. West Inglewood/Hawthorne aren't too bad either, but both cities are quite far from downtown.

Is it because of the undocumented situation as the primary reason why south central is so bad.
