Default 405 freeway Traffic from elsugundo to UCLA

Hi! i am thinking about moving to El Sugundo and commute to UCLA. From reading the forum, i assume the traffic is very bad. I estimate that it will take me an hour to go just 15 miles. For me, that really ridiculous and i'm surpraised nothing has been done about it.

Anyway, i was wondering if there there any shortcut that i can take?

From what time in the morning does traffic last(what times are the worst)? What about during the evening time- what time are traffic the worst.

thank you!

Well, what do you propose we do about it? *snicker*

I would say that you only have two other routes: La Cienega, or PCH, and neither will be as good as the 405. I would expect either of those to be slower due to stoplights.

Sorry I can't help more with this question, I wouldn't take on such a commute.

As far as how to fix the problem, live near UCLA.

There's some neighborhoods within a few miles that will have similar rents to El Segundo.

Good luck!

There is a vanpool that goes from the South Bay (El Segundo is in the north part of the South Bay) straight to UCLA. I used to see it on the 405 all the time while I was driving from Redondo to La Cienega Blvd off ramp. I can't recall the name of the vanpool but it had designated large vans with the name UCLA carpool permanently printed on them.

edited to add: Vanpool Map

If I were doing your commute sans carpool I'd make sure I did it before 7am to and before 4:30pm at the latest toward home unless you make it after 7pm toward home. Once you hit 7am north on the 405 from the South Bay to West LA is a nightmare, the traffic clogs up significantly worse.

If more people chose to live in the same area where they work/go to school, the commutes wouldn't be so bad. Sepulveda would be a surface street alternative to the 405, but I can't comment on how the traffic compares to the freeway during rush hour.

I'm sure a lot of people would choose to live in Westwood or Beverly Hills if they could afford to. But for those of us who can't we have to commute. UCLA is located in a very very expensive part of town. USC is located in a gang war zone. I couldn't live near UCLA and I wouldn't live near USC.

LA is a very spread out city and most people here cannot (price) or would not (terrible area) choose to live near where they work.

My sister in law lives in San Pedro and commutes to Wlishire & Gayley, just down the street from UCLA. She leaves home around 7:45am and gets there between 9 and 9:30 but some of that includes driving up through the parking structure 6 floors or so. Not sure about the evenings but I know she sometimes stays late to wait out some of the traffic. El Segundo isn't as far as San Pedro, maybe half the distance or less.

From El Segundo to UCLA is counter the prevailing traffic. You're heading north while everyone else is heading south. As a 405 veteran, it shouldn't take you more than 30 mins to travel that distance.

I agree on the counter traffic comment. It still backs up when you get to La Cienega and anything past 7am can be brutally difficult even though you're going north.

Try taking Sepulveda to Jefferson to Inglewood to Washington to McGlaughlin to Ohio to Westwood. Shouldn't take more than 45 mins.

well, i have a friend that actually goes by that route from el sugundo to ucla and it took him 1 hour. He figure he was going 15mph with stop and go traffic. That brutal. I heard LA Cienga has a "mini" freeway but that gets congested as well. Once you on it, you are pretty much stuck...

I was wondering if there is any public transportation? Like Subway(no bus please--they take forever to get anywhere) that goes to UCLA?
