Anyways, Hollywood Central Park will begin construction in 2010 and is proposed to be finished in 2012. Basically, part of the 101 in Hollywood will become a tunnel and on top of the freeway a park will be made. Check out the link for a more detailed description and before/after pictures.

it sounds like you are talking about latino families with roots here, as opposed to illegal immigrants. the former group is middle class or has middle class ambitions, and thus has the same reasons for leaving LA as everyone else who finds it too expensive a place to buy a house and save for their children's education. the latter are primarily interested in making more money than they can make at home, even if it is very little by american standards, and they have to share sub-standard living quarters with however many people it takes to pay the rent. these people aren't going to leave LA because they can't buy a house or pay private school tuition for their kids (but their children or grandchildren might in another generation), but they will leave if there's a devastated city to be rebuilt and ample construction jobs. (recall new orleans.) low-skilled jobs drive their migratory patterns, not middle class ambitions, and they'll stay here as long as there is work available, and more will follow as long as there is no one standing at the border to stop them.
thanks for the info on hollywood central park. in that neighborhood, it will be another macarthur park before the decade is out. [heavy sigh]

Another McArthur Park is exactly what first came to mind when I thought about the park, but perhaps we're wrong. I still don't know why they are waiting until 2010 to build this thing. Those behind this project should have an idea of what they want the park to be and I don't think another McArthur is what they have in mind. Especially since McArthur is also being proposed to be renovated.

So you're saying they're going to make new buildings in the area?

They are building new buildings all across Hollywood, Korea town and downtown. As far as making it a succesful park, I'm not sure what they are planning to do with it. One thing these parks NEED to have is A LOT of trees. 80% of the park should be covered with tree's. I was walking across Pershing square two days ago and I asked myself 'why aren't there a lot more people taking a break or spending time here?' Then I noticed that it's hard to spend more than 15 mins in that place because there's hardly any tree's to get some shade and relax under the burning sun. Anyways, thats just my opinion.
