I know someone that just bought a house for $150k less than the original list price. Of course it still cost $500k and it's a 70 mile commute from work.

Sounds like Lancaster. You can definitely buy a respectable $500k house in safe and clean SGV.

There's no need to buy something out in the desert.

Nice guess but actually Ojai. But Lancaster, Palmdale and Santa Clarita are the most popular options with my coworkers. Another trend recently is mobile homes in places like Sunland/Tujunga. I could never bring myself to buy a mobile home since you don't own the land.

I have been seeing decent looking 2/3 bed homes in Newhall area and I'm starting to rationalize that but I still think finding a job in another state is a better option
