A few years back, I was in So. Cal. looking around at neighborhoods. I have tried to move back about 3x in the last 10 or so years, never having it materialize. I checked out SP, thinking it might be both affordable and have access to the much coveted coastal breeze effect. I thought it would be gentrified by now. It was expensive and too close to bad areas for comfort. Bad area = an area of which I did not get a good vibe and my instincts are pretty good. Unless you can afford the "blend zone" up into PV, I wouldn't mess with San Pedro.

Hi,
I just came across while I was GOOGLING about a recent murder in San Pedro. Ummmm, a freaky coincidence you could say. I am 28 and grew up in Palos Verdes not too far from San Pedro...by the Trump golf course. I have lived here most of my life and love CA. However, San Pedro is NOT the best place to live or raise a family. If you are serious about relocating to CA, San Diego is your best bet. If not then I highly recommend you choose somewhere else, other than San Pedro, to live. I have a beautiful apt in South Redondo/Torrance area and I love it. The place is 800 SFT and very quite. Since you will be looking for a house you might want to consider Torrance off PCH (PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY) and CRENSHAW. If you can afford a home with a minimum of 1.2 mill then look at Rolling Hills, Palos Verdes, Redondo or Manhattan Beach. Playa, El Segundo and Marina are also great. The schools in these areas are MUCH better, as I used to teach in one. They are run independently of LA school districts, have less crime and better teachers.
Hope this helps

I played football against Mary Star of the Sea (in San Pedro) in 1976. We won. As our bus pulled away from the curb at their stadium we were hammered with rocks and bottles. Busted out our bus windows. My buddy sitting next to me got glass in his eye. We were at Torrance hospital till around 12 or 1 AM.

The OP is looking at rent for about $1400-$1500 for a 2 bedroom. Doubt that's doable in many of the areas nicer areas in the beach cities but then I've been out of the rental market for some time.

May I add a word of caution about posts that over generalize an entire city. There are so many lovely areas of San Pedro. I know I'm a newer member and poster here BUT I have MANY friends with children who live quite safely and happily in the upper neighborhoods in San Pedro. By upper I mean up the hill although the Pt. Fermin area is quite nice as well in additional to Paseo del Mar, South Shores and the like. But we're talking $$$ to live in the nicer areas.

Murder can happen anywhere. I'd recommend to look at the crime logs, most of the crime is concentrated in the lower pockets of San Pedro. Gasp, even The Peninsula has had a few. Couple of years ago an ederly couple's son killed his parents in their own home. Then there's the dad who is charged with pushing his young daughter off the cliff over a custody issue.

As is relative in almost any large city, socio-economics come into play. Are there safer overall cities (statistically speaking) you bet. Can you live safely in San Pedro you bet.

As always, just my .02.

I do recall that murder with the young girl. It happened over where Marineland used to be.

You are correct about generalizing a whole city but statistically San Pedro has more murders than PV. Since we are on the topic, it's the type of murders and violence that i am referring to. Gang related violence and shootings occur in poor areas. Since San Pedro is the topic of this post that is why I was referring to that area. There is also an area in San Pedro which is 90275....PV. I dont consider this PV, personally, but you can find better homes and areas here.

Three co-workers live in San Pedro, west of Western near 25th, and they like it. One has elementary kids, and she likes their school. The drive to downtown is a little rough at times, though.

anywhere west of 22nd street is nice. you might find a 2bd in pt. fermin in your price range, and it is a very nice area...except don't be fooled about claims of sea breezes, there is a lot of port pollution on that side of the peninsula.

One of my sisters and her family live in the Miraleste area of Rancho Palos Verdes, bordering San Pedro. The parts of San Pedro that border PV seem to be nicer than many of the other areas of town, and as such, would definitely be more expensive areas in which to live.

Yes, this is very true. I attended school in that area when i was younger. This is a great and BEAUTIFUL area to raise a family. I recommend you GOOGLE this and conduct some more research.
