Was the only reason why downtown L.A. was created was because it was going to be used as a backdrop set for movies and cars? Is that also why some parts of downtown L.A. look like new york? Is downtown L.A. just a big realistic scale model of a Hollywood set?

no, LA is used all the time. especially the bridges over the river. from downtown east. santa fe is always closed for filming. a couple months back they were filming in the projects. then last month 8th street behind the old ambassador was used as a FRISCO set!!!! its the industry brother. they love LA and on top of that since a lot of companies are here its cheaper to make it look like other cities than actually filming in other cities.

Don't think so. Los Angeles was founded in 1781, long before movies!
And by 1850 or so, it was growing pretty fast and there were still no movies.

Must second this. Don't think El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula was founded to make películas.

That said, downtown LA is often transformed by filmmakers to be just about any city they want it to be.

They film so much downtown because after business hours the place is mostly empty. It makes it more feasible to shut down streets and such.
