I remember back in the 90's when you'd see thugs and cholos just walking along the freeway or lingering around parks. Back then it was a daily sight in Boyle Heights, Arts District, and WestLake/Mcarthur Park.

Throughout 2015 i'd see very few "gangsters" and if i did see them, they would be by themselves. In modern DTLA, homeless are more aggressive to strangers than gangs are to strangers.

My real question is, do all the few remaining people in that culture gather on occuasions to try to keep it alive or something?

Yes. I've seen them on occasion at a Westside park, hanging out, writing graffiti, getting into fights with each other, etc.

I have yet to see a full blown gang posse in LA. I think they've really left the city.

I have seen elements of it and I've gotta say gang bangers are WAY scarier in real life than what they show in the movies. I saw one guy that was clearly in a gang at a La Vallarta. He was tatted from head to toe with a giant 18 stamped on his neck. He looked as though the gang just stole his soul. It was freaky seeing that in real life. I know I sound like such a white boy from the burbs but that was my initial impression of seeing a real deal gang member.

It's still alive, in different forms. It's not on the corner anymore, it's more inside. Out in the IE, there are places with old school porch rockers like San Berdoo and Crestmore. Gangstas moving to the cheaper IE has been going on since the 90's. Parents thought it was safer...all they did was end up moving the gangs.

As far as South Central, I know a lot of guys in their 50's still talking and thinking like the 80's and 90's. They just don't bang, they are too old. A lot old schoolers will tell you how most of their homies are locked up, or dead.

Some other things that really changed everything we're gang injunctions, and making cruising illegal. That takes away two major ways of hanging out. Couple that with modern technology like texting, and the Internet, society as a whole doesn't get together in groups anymore as much as they used to.
