FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 09, 2015
Census Bureau Statement on Classifying Filipinos
November 09, 2015

NOV. 9, 2015 — The Census Bureau has no current plans to classify Filipinos outside of the Asian race category. Filipinos are classified as Asian on Census Bureau forms based on the Office of Management and Budget’s definition, which specifically states that people whose origins are from the Philippine Islands are part of the category Asian.

According to OMB, Asian refers to a person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent, including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand and Vietnam.

At this time, the Census Bureau is conducting the 2015 National Content Test and is testing the design of the race question for the 2020 Census. This test will frame the recommendations for the 2020 Census race question, which has Filipino as an example under the Asian category.
Thanks for the correction....goes to show you never trust everything you read on the internet. That site did look a little suspect.

How are we defining Asia here? Are we including the middle east, the Indian sub-continent, the Stans? Or are we specifically talking about just East Asia here?

I think in this thread it's defined as the area we called the Orient before 1992, but we don't call it that anymore, even though there are many businesses with the term Orient in their name.

Korean: more patriarchal than Chinese (male machismo, chauvinism); alcohol a much bigger part of social culture than other Asians; friendly but closed culture (even in the US, not open to dating/intermarrying outside of culture - including other Asians); religion (Christianity) a much bigger part of the culture; men and women generally perceived by other Asians as the best looking; very collectivist; 2nd generation almost all can still speak fluent Korean

Japanese: overly polite; even more closed of a culture than Koreans, but paradoxically, when migrating or emigrating to other countries, they are the most open to dating/intermarrying outside of their culture (Brazil, US, etc) and integrating or even disappearing into their adopted country; very collectivist, overly clean - in public, you can usually tell the difference between a group of Japanese vs Chinese based on behavior alone; like the Chinese, 2nd generation and beyond can only speak their adopted language (no Japanese)

Vietnamese: the friendliest, warm and engaging folks - when dealing with non-Asians. With other Asians, not shy in showing animosity or hostility. Compared to Thais, Laotians, etc they tend to be the loudest, most individualistic, least gentle (while a Thai may greet you with a slight bow or a polite smile, a Vietnamese will greet you with a huge grin and a grab of your shoulder); like Koreans, 2nd gen immigrants and beyond good at retaining their language; also relatively open to dating/intermarrying outside of culture and race

Malaysians/Indonesians: many you'll see in the US are ethnic Chinese minorities and more like Chinese; the Malays and Pribumis (Indonesians) are predominantly Muslim, but liberal (alcohol is freely available) - but not as open to intermarrying or dating outside of race or religion like other Asians, but socially speaking seem to be more open to mixing with other cultures than Koreans
Excellent post! Much of these themes can also be observed when doing business with these cultures.

Filipinos and, to a lesser extent, Vietnamese tend to be Roman Catholic and very devout at that.

Filipinos also tend to speak more confidently and with more direct eye contact than those from other Asian cultures, probably due to the colonial Spanish and American influences.

Blame poor American education...most people in this country do not understand the geography of South Asia very well.

Japanese consider themselves equal to Americans and Germans. They look down upon Chinese etc. as lower class.
