Don't let them discourage you, Dontworryaboutit. As someone who has worked in the entertainment industry, I can assure you that L.A. suffers from a critical shortage of actors!

I know of many projects -- films, TV shows -- that are fully funded to the tune of tens of millions of dollars. Yet they are not being produced because there are no actors available!

Studio executives, agents, producers are sitting idly, with huge piles of cash of their desks, and no actors to take it. The situation is so dire that casting directors are driving around town, waving bags of money while shouting to random passersby, "Are you an actor? What about you? Any of you actors?" Yet they are unable to find anyone willing to take their money.

Just fly out here. Call up any of the studios and tell them you're an actor. They'll rush out a limo to pick up you, desperate to hire you before a competing studio does.

Seriously, you should be sitting at home in your Beverly Hills mansion, reading scripts beside your pool, within a week of your arrival.

Are you in SAG-AFTRA? If not, a big barrier here.
Yep and if not, good luck getting in. No matter how good you are you'll be limited to small independent productions and extra work. I know people that do that and they need another real job or two to survive. Honestly haven't heard of any actors on welfare out here.

Kudos to you, OP, for not referring to California as "Cali."

How does one even get into SAG-AFTRA? Heard it was a paradox where you need SAG to act on screen but you need to be on screen to be in SAG. I've looked into this a lot before BUT I could use a refresher or two.

This is concise: How to Get a SAG Card: 3 Steps (with Pictures) - wikiHow

The working as an extra route, examples: Central Casting, Extras Management, Standing Room Only, many more. Some require dues.

Will add, at least it appears you can take abuse and rejection, actually a good quality to have as an actor.

That's OK, you'll never be leaving Boston anyway, not for Richmond, not for Seattle, not for LA.

Well, when I moved here - I got the government to pay for my ticket (heck they even moved my stuff for free), they gave me a place to live, free medical and dental, free food, plus they gave me free education and a job. Got all this from day one.......someone came to my house in the Midwest and helped me set it all up before I even left home....

I'm pretty sure you have helpful folks like that in your hometown too.
