I'm planning on visiting Los Angeles in a few months during the summer. I know to avoid south central (A humongous area south of I-10, west of I-710, east of I-405 and north of CA-91). Are there any other areas to avoid?

I'm planning on staying in the south-eastern San Fernando Valley. Think Hollywood, North Hollywood, Burbank, Van Nuys. Or I might stay in Santa Monica/Venice beach,

What do you plan on doing when you are in LA? The Valley, Santa Monica, and Hollywood are 3 completely different areas not close to each other at all. Will you have a car? Also, you don't need to avoid South Central so much as there will be no reason for you to go there in the first place. Have fun.

Visit the beach in Santa Monica, Universal Studios, Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, Downtown and possibly Knotts Berry Farm

Sun Valley once had the highest murder rate per capita. Avoid the bad places at night, although crime can happen almost anywhere. Ronni Chasen was shot driving through Beverly Hills by an unemployed felon. Governor Jerry Brown has been letting droves of felons out of prison early so you have to be vigilant.

Avoid Van Nuys. This is the first time I've heard of someone coming to visit LA with intention to go to Van Nuys

I live in Van Nuys all my life and it's very crime infested and sketchy. Don't ever visit Van Nuys, because there's nothing to do and it's very boring and high crime rates. Not a good place for tourists though to visit.

Yeah, best be vigilant on account of all those non-violent felons who had their mandatory-minimum sentences reduced for good behavior.

Like the non-violent felon who murdered the 7-Eleven owner outside his store in Valley Village?

Hmm...I can't think of any areas a tourist would frequent that should be avoided.

As a matter of fact, as a young woman in my early 20s I worked in several different locations in the "South-Central" area you mentioned. Never had a problem. Of course, I wasn't wandering the streets alone at night.
