Why is it OK for Armenians to fly Armenian flags on their cars? (Los Angeles: condo, hotels)

Many of them are US born which makes it worse. My grandparents survived the Holocaust and they were not running around flying Israeli flags, or Polish or German. They were extremely proud to be Americans when they immigrated.

I feel, in So Cal, some would perceive American flag on a vehicle the same as a Confederate flag.
In a diverse, multi-national country such as the US, it does make sense to see these overly patriotic/proud individuals to wave the flags of their birth land or where their ancestors came from.

I agree, if you emigrated to another country, let it go, at least until you go back to your own country.
Oh wait, who would really wave the flag of their own country while they are there unless they are at a sports event competing against a foreign team?

This whole "Proud to be Irish/Mexican/etc." propaganda is really silly, imo. Do I really have to announce to everyone that I am proud of my origins? Why would anyone think otherwise?
Should not the country I am originally from be proud of me instead?

I have a neighbor that is an immigrant in a mostly hispanic neighborhood and they fly an American flag out front.

I just think it's probably rare for anyone ..whether U.S born or not to fly the U.S flag in L.A
Outside of national holidays like 4th of July,etc.

In America , individual accomplishments seem to be more important than family history or heritage...especially on the West Coast.
In New York , it still seems to be important about what family one comes from...probably mostly among the wealthy

I know in the Middle East , it's really important for them , and I think it's annoying. I don't like the idea of people viewing people a certain way or judging them just based on the family they came from.

I think this translates also into Nationalism or being proud of the nation they came from.

I just saw My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and the film makes fun of this super pride of the Greek immigrants, especially the Grandfather...he's always talking nonstop about how Greece is the best and everything was invented by the Greeks,etc.
Wants his granddaughter to marry a good GREEK guy.

A lot of this translates to different immigrants in America..which is why I'm sure why the film is so popular.
In this particular example considering the time of year...I just thought it was for Armenian Genocide rememberance.

This is a huge holiday for Armenians. To give an example , I used to take my car to a dealership and they closed for that day because most of the workers were Armenian.
Zankou chicken closes on that day too and probably every other Armenian owned business.

Well I'm more proud to represent my sports team.

I fly my La Liga BARCA team flag and during the last world cup,

I rocked the Netherlands flag on my car . When Mexico lost against the Netherlands , I drove past East L.A almost got my flag pull off by some Mexicans Lol !


And I'm not even from there . I just like their soccer teams and players

I thought it odd that the OP would choose to focus on this particular ethnic group, in Los Angeles, to pick a bone about people in America flying the native flag of their peoples. If y'all know what I mean.

But then I realized I think I know what the OP's doing. The OP chose a 'safer' ethnicity to bring up the issue of nativism and patriotism, instead of focusing on the usual group of people who get criticized for flying foreign flags in L.A.

The OP is ALWAYS complaining about Armenians in general. The way they drive, and now he has a problem with them waving the Armenian flag.

This thread makes me want to go out and buy a gigantic poster with Africa right in the middle of it and hang it outside my house.

I've seen this as well. In general, I don't like it when another country's flags are flown on a vehicle or outside a house, etc. I generally find it disrespectful because immigrants came to the US to have an opportunity or have the freedom to do something they couldn't do in their homeland. But some people just like to take and not to give. You can still keep your heritage and customs and also show your respect for this country by either flying the flag or at least trying to learn English.

If someone is going to have another country's flag, at least have the American flag as well. That at least I understand because it's keeping your roots intact, but also recognizing that by immigrating to this country, you are now American and embracing the country and its values.

In the case of Armenians with flags on their cars, I'm pretty sure this is due to the fact that the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day is coming up. You see it every year during April. Also, there is currently a conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan that has claimed a fair number of lives compared to past flare ups.

Who's to say that they aren't proud to be American as well? You have a very black and white opinion on this matter, and it doesn't translate to what they might think or feel.

I personally live in a city where I see monuments dedicated to other ethnicities, featuring their flags, in addition to bumper stickers, license plate covers, etc, that are all dedicated to various ethnicities. I also see American and Chicago flags every day as well.

It's not a big deal. If you want some Donald Trump "Make America Great Again" locale, then I suggest moving.
