when you say east LA, are you referring to the neighborhoods directly east of downtown or what some people now call the eastside that encompasses silverlake, echo park, highland park, eagle rock, etc.?

Apparently when you sign into the LA forum you don't read the opening page threads. There are tons of people who would love to live in SM. ( marine layer and all). It's not the lack of parking, traffic, congestion, or the homeless that stops them... it's the expense.
I can leave my car in my garage, in the driveway, or in front of my house and walk to do most things... market, bank, dry cleaners. Post office, beach etc.
If parking and the marine layer are you're main qualms about Santa Monica I think that most people wouldn't have an issue with having to deal with those things in order to live in such a desirable area.
Yeah, so there ( right back at ya)!

I was being sarcastic!

Obviously I'd love to live in SM.
