I know it's been discussed on here before but it's an old thread. I'll be working in Westlake but was hoping to live near the beach. Santa Monica came to mind, only because I'm a 33yr single male. I've looked at commute times through google maps and it seems like leaving at 6am, my commute shouldn't be longer than 45 minutes. Any comments on that? Or other suggestions where to live?

Differentiate between:

i wouldn't do it, but that's just me. 45 minutes seems a bit low as well unless there is zero traffic on the 405 and 101. if you take PCH, i'm not sure 45 minutes is possible at reasonable speeds.

If you actually meant Westlake, the neighborhood, it would be very doable at 6 am, an easy straight shot down the 10. But since you mean Westlake VIllage, that's a lot more challenging and stressful even without much traffic. Consider living closer to work somehow.

Canyon choices between PCH and the 101:

Kanan Rd. is the fastest canyon, light and the least affected by weather. Downside, the light at turn onto PCH can be long, and you must travel longer on PCH to and from SM.

Las Virgenes/Malibu moves swiftly, and the passage onto PCH is wide and has choices, and it puts you in the heart of Malibu. Downside, it is the gnarliest canyon, deep and steep with tight turns; be wary in weather.

Topanga Canyon is swoopier, up and down, up and down, lots of turns, but gentle turns. It gets you more time on the 101. Downside, can be slow around the village center, and can flash flood. Also, the traffic at PCH is heavy in beach weather.

I'm glad you posted because I assumed the OP meant Westlake/MacArthur park near downtown. Unless you're absolutely in love with Santa Monica and nowhere else, try to live closer to work. Maybe Malibu since you like the beach.

Thanks for the responses. Everyone from there even someone from Santa Monica said using the google maps for the time range I'd leave is fairly accurate. So 6am may work. 45-1hr commutes are not bad, coming from Chicagoland area, I'm used to it. I guess I'd prefer to move to a town that is single friendly and walking distance to places. Proximity to the beach is also preferred. Malibu seems like the perfect option but I'm not finding many rentals. What sites do you recommend?
