Hello - Looking for advice about where to move in LA. Female - single - 31! Currently live in NYC. I work remotely and travel quite a bit so just need to be relatively close to LAX. Looking for a beach town. Looking to spend somewhere between 1500-1800 on rent. Not so much a drinker as I am enjoying the outdoors, working out, living that active lifestyle. Would love a more walkable area but that's not crazy expensive.

1. Where would you recommend
2. What are average rent prices there
3. How do you go about finding a place? Craigslist? Zillow?

Thanks in advance!

Are you looking for a roommate to split rent with? Since you travel a lot that would probably make the most sense. For your budget you should be looking for beach-adjacent and not right on the beach. Maybe Marina del Rey. It's close to LAX and cheaper than the beach.

Yup - open to a roommate as that's what I've done in NYC. Will look into Marina del Rey.

For finding a place, start with PadMapper.com. It consolidates the major websites. Realtor.com is good as well. Like MordinSolus said, a roommate will be your best bet because it's going to be very tough to find a place near a beach for that kind of money. Maybe a run-down efficiency in Hermosa or Torrance, but even that's a bit doubtful.

The San Fernando Valley and Conejo Valley is cheaper than the other side of the hill (the Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Malibu side). It gets really hot in the summer on the Valley side though. Apartments.com

I'd recommend areas like El Segundo, Playa Del Rey, or Westchester if you want to live close to LAX. Do take into account the cost of rent, bills, and necessary provisions.

Is it completely unreasonable to find an apartment, with a roommate, in Santa Monica or Marine del Rey for 1500 -1800 for my portion?

It's not unreasonable to find an apartment in Santa Monica or MdR for $3-3.5K. It may be harder to find someone willing to split it with you, though.

However, there do seem to be studios and 1-bedroom apartments in Santa Monica around that price range:

Thank you - super helpful! I didn't think there were studio's in that price range, which is great to know.
