I bring this topic up because I have heard people refer to "cities in the San Gabriel Valley" that I have not really thought of as such.

For example, someone I knew would always say, "I grew up in Pico Rivera in the San Gabriel Valley." I have not considered this city to be part of the SGV, but rather one of the "Gateway Cities" of Los Angeles. Some place Whittier in the SGV as well. I (kind of) see why on that one, since part of the 90601 zip code is technically over the grade which separates the SGV from the coastal plain.

The way I understand the area, it consists of these cities/communities:

Pasadena
Altadena
South Pasadena
San Marino
Alhambra
Monterey Park
Rosemead
El Monte
San Gabriel
South El Monte
Temple City
Arcadia
Duarte
Bradbury
Monrovia
Irwindale
Azusa
Glendora
West Covina
Covina
La Puente
City of Industry

and, for the unincorporated communities:

South San Gabriel
Bassett
Hacienda Heights
Rowland Heights
Valinda
some other pockets between San Gabriel and San Marino, and between Pasadena and Arcadia

Not sure if Diamond Bar or San Dimas should be in SGV or the Pomona Valley. The change in area code can throw one off plus there is a rise in elevation in both cities compared to everything west of them.

All you in the know, please weigh in!

Thanks!

Probably not at all accurate in a....geological sense, but personally I always think of SGV like this:

East of the 110, south of the 210, west of the 605, north of the 10.

Thanks. Didn't mention Avocado Heights because not sure people would know where that is (westside of the Puente Valley toward the 605).

Wikipedia can be weird sometimes, though. What's Hillgrove? And didn't know El Monte had its own section specifically titled "North El Monte", unless that was in reference to Norwood Village.

Some of those designations look as if they hearken back to a time when they were actual villages.

Probably a specific website would be better than Wikipedia.

Wow, I have never heard of Valinda, CA (or Hillgrove or Bassett, for that matter).

Quite a few name on the list are CDP designations. Basically nick names of unincorporated areas.

Once again, proving your screen name. Survey says: ehhhhhhhh!

Nothing there is "all Chinese". It's a mix of Asian and Hispanic folk, with healthy doses of "white" types and a good sprinkling of blacks, particularly in Altadena, Pasadena, and a bit of Monrovia.

Altadena has some especially awesome neighborhoods. Almost as if the houses are interlopers on the pine trees and land.

If that was an attempt at humor, gongggggg!!!!!!!

I am sure that black people in New Jersey would be incensed if I referred to every neighborhood they inhabited as "ghetto". Or, that if it wasn't black, it wasn't Newark, or Elizabeth, or Jersey City, or Camden.
