This is a serious question. Which one is the better place to live? I say yes for the following reasons in no particular order:

1. Pasadena has better architecture and more character (commercial, residential and governmental);
2. Pasadena has more cultural institutions and art museums;
3. Pasadena is less flashy and a bit more down-to-earth;
4. Pasadena, although not cheap, is more affordable than Santa Monica;
5. Pasadena has much less of an entertainment industry presence (read: fewer douche bags);
6. Pasadena is more diverse (class, race/ethnicity, etc.);
7. Pasadena has a world class university (Cal-Tech) and a top tier art school (Art Center College of Design);
8. Pasadena has easier access to the City of LA's most interesting hoods (DTLA, Echo Park, Silverlake, etc.);
9. Pasadena is where Jackie Robinson grew up and Van Halen got their start;
10. Old Town Pasadena > Third Street Promenade;

Pasadena has a much larger Armenian Guido-esque youth subculture than Santa Monica, so some people might beg to differ about douche bags.

Pas does have better drivers than SM, though.

#9 makes me laugh. One chooses a city based on a famous person's former residence?

Having lived in both cities, I don't think one is "better" than the other, and where someone works has a HUGE bearing on his/her place of residence.

Santa Monica traffic is death and its hella expensive. And their beach sucks.

Pasadena is still LA affordable for rents and it has the Gold Line.

Why wouldn't this be a serious question?

I prefer Pasadena, but I'm not sure why someone would base where their choice of residence will be on which celebrity grew up there. Sounds like something a transplant would do.

Santa Monica is a better place to visit. However, Pasadena is a better place to live.

I have relatives in both Pasadena and Altadena. None of them have any complaints.

#5 Pasadena stopped the 710 from being completed.

As for #9 - Pas may have produced Van Halen but SM produced Jane's Addiction

Yes, I was kidding around with No. 9...although Jackie R. is a historic figure, much more than a celebrity.
