Default Seattle to LA - please need advice on moving

My boyfriend and I will be moving to LA from Seattle in a couple months for a new job. I spent part of my childhood living the valley, but have only spent minimal time in LA (mainly Long Beach) over the last 15 years so have not kept up with neighborhood changes and such. I am very much looking forward to moving back, however, as I never did assimilate to the NW weather.

Would like your assistance in locating a good, safe area to live. We will be commuting to downtown LA daily in the midst of the commute. I have watched traffic patterns online, but find them only somewhat reliable in Seattle so I would like to hear it from someone that does it daily. Seattle has bad traffic, but I know LA is worse. Would like to keep the daily commute to 45 minutes each way or under on an "ideal" day.

In our mid-late 30's, no kids, would like some mellower nightlife, good restaurants, shopping, walkable area. Considering Westside, Glendale, Pasadena, etc. We are renting for at least the first year and can afford 2700 - 3000/month but would love to rent a small house or townhouse for our pets.

Appreciate any advice...thank you!

My first choice would be Pasadena, specifically, the Old Town area. There's tons of shopping and dining and some pretty good night life. The drive to downtown would not be too bad, or you could even take public transportation by way of Metro Gold Line.

Here are some properties.
This is my favorite-right in the heart of Old Town: 3 Units for lease - Heart of Old Town Pasadena - loft condos
Luxury Style Apartment 1MONTH FREE $1000 OFF LOOK & LEASE

Next I would suggest downtown itself.

Gorgeous 2 Bed Downtown Apt - Panoramic Views
...you get the idea.

If you live in downtown, there's plenty of restaurants, but most activity takes place in West Hollywood.

Another nice area is Westwood, my favorite area of LA. May be a little too far from downtown though.
Lights, Camera, PALAZZO WESTWOOD VILLAGE
Walk to Westwood Village, Fully Remodeled, Rooftop Pool and Spa!!!
Luxury Apartment - Beautifully Renovated !!
Fun, Neighborly, All Amenity Condo

The West Hollywood/Beverly Center/Beverly Hills/Miracle Mile District area is where most stuff goes on in LA.

You would be the envy of millions if you lived here this close to The Grove-http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/apa/574068388.html
Or here:in 4-Plex Apartment Completely renovated., Stunning upper, original detail, parking, balcony, 2 bedrooms+2 bath walk to the grove., Large Airy 1920'S Upper in 4-plex, Pet Friendly, Walk to everything

Sorry for giving you so many listings, but sometimes people from out of town don't know the good areas from bad areas and fun areas from boring areas, so I like to try and be helpful.

WeHo/BH/BC/MMD will be the most fun. Then Pasadena. They'll both be about the same drive to downtown, but the plus about Pasadena is the public transportation is much better. Downtown is pretty safe, but it's still not perfect and there are quite a few rundown areas. If you would rather be in a very safe area than just an okay area, don't move Downtown. Westwood is a very fun area and is just coming back after a strong gang problem a while ago. It's extremely safe now, but due to UCLA being only blocks away, a lot of the people there are college students. If you would rather be with an older crowd, Westwood is not for you.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you would like anymore help or would like to search another area.
