You can buy a nice house
Near the ocean for the cost it would take to buy a decaying house in Hayward ca. They're stubborn and have lived in the area since the 60s. They'd still own half a duplex here and could use that for taking care of the mortgage. We could buy hypothetically in the 700s. We'd prefer multi family or a large sfh ranch.

It's not that easy. Try the Inland Empire. I think it'll be nice for your mom for a change.

I've seen 1200 square foot homes in Long Beach near the ocean for less than 700g. We don't need to look in the crappy IE.

That's not exactly the large SF ranch you said you could get in the 700's but I do see homes comparable size in the $500's in Hayward.

Hayward is also a dangerous place and many of the houses are crumbling. It's your version of Compton, Inglewood, Downey or South Central.

There's areas close to beaches for cheaper than that in places other than LA.

And what is the reason to stay in CA? Clearly none of you have jobs holding you back if you can move from bay area to south bay. I would be looking at Oregon coast or someplace else where it's not just cheaper but overall lower taxes and cost of living
