What line of work are you in?
Where do you want to work (expect to work, hope to work)?
What will your rent budget be?

You are Lucky, you do the type of work that needs to be done everywhere. you can get a job anywhere you want. So I have to wonder why you would want to be in a place like Los Angeles. You may make more money in LA but the cost of living will eat that up real quick.

LA is a beautiful and ugly city at the same time. For about $1200 a month, you maybe be able to find a decent 1 bedroom or a studio. As for the areas you live may want to live in, it all depends on your style. Downtown is very noisy and crowded. But you can walk almost anywhere there (during day time only). Hollywood seems to be a good place also, though it does have it's ruff parts.
I am not to familiar with Sherman Oaks. That's more the valley then the actual city life. Good Luck with your search!!

That movie scared the crap out of me when I saw it (1971) as a kid (by the way, I was going to mention it in the LA Downtown used as movie set thread).

i found a good studio in a quite neighborhood, west toluca lake, for only $875 a month. keep checking craigslist, as soon as you see something you like, call immediately. i got here on a saturday at 9:30 am and on monday at 11:00 am i was moving my stuff into the room.
craigslist was the absolute best site i found for apartments, westside rentals is supposed to be good, but i refuse to pay to look for apartments, plus, a lot of the ones on westside rentals are also on craigslist and rent.com.
