Illegal immigration definitely has a lot to do with it . There is a lot of poverty in Los Angeles and of course that's contrasted with a lot of wealth .
Another thing that keeps the areas looking how they are is rent control and anti development attitudes too .
If landlords could do what they wanted or improve properties and raise rents in a short amount of time things would look different .

OP just wondering why you are surprised about this , haven't you lived here a while now? Are you just starting to explore LA more now?

have you driven around west of downtown for example?

it might as well be shanty towns like in Rio.

is this related to illegal immigration or the majority of people here would rather work at a fast food joint?
From what I have seen being out everyday east Los Angeles is very poor. I've never been to Rio though.

To the OP.....L.A is not in a gated community and has millions of people from all over the world with different cultures, standards, income, etc,so basically L.A faces problems just like any other Major U.S City.

In my opinion most of L.A looks fine to me,while certain parts do need to be revitalized, but L.A is improving as time goes by,you just have to take a look at Downtown and see the major transformation that's occurring in L.A,and this transformation is spreading throughout the entire region.

Not sure I understand the generalization being made....

Malibu is paradise for wealthy seeking privacy. Unless you've been invited into someone's Malibu home, it's difficult to grasp the appeal.

"West of DTLA" is Korea Town, filled with working class people. KTown is seeing a lot of development and rapidly adding upscale apartments. Just west of KTown is Central LA and the Miracle Mile, quite 1st-world neighborhoods.

This is no different than any other major US city. All those McDonalds cashiers and post office workers have to live somewhere.

Lots of nice areas in LA County outside the West Side. Pasadena, Diamond Bar, Claremont to name a few. Maybe the poster should get out more and explore the area.

LOLd.

I should probably re-phrase what I said -

There are no nice areas in the city of LA. Literally none.

The nice areas are literally different cities.

Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Pasadena, Claremont, etc. are all different CITIES...lol.
