Non-pub/Spec. Ed. Schools??
Hey all,
The time has come and I'll be flying into LAX the morning of February 27th. I don't have a job lined up yet but I'll start interviewing/looking once I touch down. Currently, I work at a non-public special education school for emotionally disturbed children as the Program Assistant (Secretary). So far I've applied for regular Administrative positions with companies but I would love to work in the same field/environment. So does California have these types of special education schools? And if so, where can I look to apply? I've tried doing a search but no luck, it was actual kind of confusing. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hmmmm. So its a private special needs school for the mentally handicapped? I dont think there are any special schools for " emotionally disturbed" children here and have never heard of anyone placing a child in a special school for the "emotionally disturbed".

Well I don't know how they do things where ever you are but that is how it's done here in MD. The children who attend my school have IEPs (Individual Education Plans) and each child has a "code" of 06(a few have codes 08, 09, or 10) on their IEP. There's about 12 different codes:
01- Mental Retardation
02- Hearing impairment
03- Deafness
04- Speech & Language impairment
05- Visual Impairment
06- Emotional Disturbance
07- Orthopedic impairment
08- Other health impairment
09- Specific learning disability
10- Multiple disabilities
11- There is no 11 for some reason
12- Deaf-blindess
13- Traumatic brain injury
14- Autism
Students with the emotional disturbance code usually have one or a combination of: ADD, ADHD, OCD, Bipolar Disorder, PTSD, ODD, Mood Disorder, Anxiety. There are a few more but I can't think of anymore. Most of them are also on medication: Abilify, Strattera, Lithium, Lexapro, Topomax, Adderall, Ritalin, Zoloft, etc.
Here is a website to take a look at as well: MANSEF-Maryland Association of Nonpublic Special Education Facilities . Check for yourself because I know what I'm talking about. I came here to ask a question and I felt like you were trying to discredit what I said/typed. If that's not the case then I apologize (I think it was though). However, if that was your objective then .
If anyone has AN ANSWER to my original question I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again.

Apology accepted . I just wanted to be sure I understood your question. I was right in my assumption that you are looking for a "special needs" school. Your question sounded like you worked at a school for "mentally disturbed" ONLY. My mother (now retired) worked 30+ years with Special Needs students so I'll ask her for the best way to apply. She worked with LAUSD schools for many years and she and I still volunteer at Widney High School in Los Angeles - http://www.lausd.k12.ca.us/Widney_HS.../yearbook.html

I have a child on an IEP however we're in public school BUT have you looked into CAPSES-California Association of Private Special Education Schools? You can search by region from within their site or by city.
Here's their link: CAPSES - California Association of Private Special Education Schools
Best of luck in your search.

yes, there is a category of special education students known in the industry as "severely emotionally disturbed," (SED) and there are, in fact, schools that exist to meet the educational and therapeutic needs of these kids, who can't be served in regular public schools. "non-public" schools are privately-run, but largely publicly-funded, schools that take up the slack, so to speak, because IDEA entitles all children to a taxpayer-funded education, regardless of the nature or severity of their disabilities. people don't usually know anything about them unless they are educators or have children who need these specialized settings. kids who can't be educated in their neighborhood schools, even with modifications, can be placed in one of these schools at taxpayer expense. many SED kids have severe behavior issues rooted past abuse and/or neglect of the most extreme form, but some are kids with clinical diagnoses of mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. many are in foster care, as well.
