Amen to this. There are plenty of spots in LA where it can take an hour to drive a mile at rush hour.

I stand by my suggestion of Malibu. Per Google maps, leaving at 6:30 am today (appropriate leaving time for UCLA hours), per my last posted route:

24 - 35 min (12.3 miles)

via CA-1 S and San Vicente Blvd
Big Rock Drive
Malibu, CA 90265

Head east on Big Rock Dr toward Seaboard Rd
2 min (0.8 mi)

Continue on CA-1 S. Take San Vicente Blvd and Sunset Blvd to Bellagio Dr in Los Angeles
28 min (11.5 mi)

Turn right onto Bellagio Dr
1 s (23 ft)
University of California, Los Angeles
Los Angeles, CA 90095

And here's the non-freeway and beautiful drive---impossible if living in Sherman Oaks--to Thousand Oaks from Malibu, same leaving time--
35 - 45 min (26.2 miles)

via CA-1 N and Kanan Rd
Big Rock Drive
Malibu, CA 90265

Head east on Big Rock Dr toward Seaboard Rd
0.8 mi

Turn right onto CA-1 N
11.5 mi

Turn right onto Kanan Dume Rd
6.2 mi

Continue onto Kanan Rd
6.2 mi

Turn left onto Canwood St
0.8 mi

Turn right onto Forest Cove Ln
0.5 mi

Turn left onto Thousand Oaks Blvd
0.4 mi
Thousand Oaks Boulevard
California

Those times are optimistic and naive to a Candide-like, Pollyannish extreme. I can tell you don't have actual experience driving on the westside in recent times.

Well also look at the departure time he's quoting.

The bottom line is that a very small commute is not going to be possible between those 2 locations. Either one person has a soul crushing one or they both have bad ones.

If your round-trip commute time is under 1 hour, you're doing pretty darn good in LA.

Not to be so blunt, but if having to drive 20-30 minutes to get somewhere is not your cup of tea, LA is the wrong place for you.

Regarding the question earlier, Sherman Oaks would be the best midpoint commute wise. Plus, lots of good restaurants and shops along Ventura Blvd and low crime.

You may be right about LA not being a good fit... We are talking about this now, we will see. But if we decide to move, we still want to have a short commute, so compromises will have to be made in other areas I guess.

Thanks.

My husband has some physical issues and cannot drive for too long, so a long commute for him is out-of-question. In any case, he decided to not accept the Thousand Oaks offer so that's not an issue anymore.

We are still planning to move to California, I got a good offer from UCLA and he's very experienced in his area and has many options so he will be fine. We are fortunate enough to have some money saved too, so he can afford to look for another job in a better location.

Thanks.

So, I have another question now. This is assuming my husband could find a good job in Century City. Anyway, I just checked Google Maps and it says that the driving between Century City and UCLA, leaving at 7:00 am would be around 12-16 min (3.2 miles), is that time accurate? Can you please let me know if this is another "if-there-are-no-cars-on-the-streets" situation or is it realistic?

Also, I was reading some old posts about Century City and they were always about people working there and asking where they could live... and everybody always suggested other areas instead of Century City itself, why is that? Is that area not good/safe? Just companies and not very residential? Not really walkable?

Thanks.

Century City is predominately an office park/shopping area complex. It's not really residential in nature.
