Default Possible relocation to LA

I might be relocated to Los Angeles area in May, but I don't know anything about the area. I just spent two weeks in San Diego and I loved it, but I am not sure how similar LA is to San Diego. I have lived in Minnesota most of my life and am ready to get out! I will be able to afford about $1100-$1200/mo for rent, I don't know how far that will get me. I would be moving by myself so I would like to be in a fairly safe area. My job would be in Gardena which I understand is right outside of Compton. I have heard that traffic is pretty bad so I would like to be no longer than a 45min commute away. Any information I could get about what general life in LA would be like for a single, 23 year old femail. There are other options for relocation but as of now I think California is my number one choice. Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure but there might be metro trains that run near that area. If so, you might be able to extend the radius of places you could live from where you work. That is, take a train to work from a place farther away than you might have driven from.

You should probably look at the Torrance area then. That would be close to Gardena.

Gardena isn't bad. Torrance is nice. You might want to think about the beach cities, Redondo, Hermosa, Manhattan. Though they might be pricey. You'll be ok if you want to have a rommate. The farest you want to go is LAX. If you are North of Gardena your commute won't be that bad. I live in West LA and commute to Long Beach, and it normally take me about 30 - 45 minutes.

My grandmother (RIP) lived in Gardena.

For the most part, it's not as bad as people make it out to be. I mean, it isn't exactly "gang free", but if you keep to yourself you should be fine (i.e: use common sense).

Maybe look into Torrance or the gentrified parts of Lawndale (Hawthorne Blvd near the mall).

Excellent suggestion.

Honestly, it's too bad you can't get a job closer to San Diego. You said you enjoyed it and I think that would be a nicer placer for you. SD and L.A. aren't very similar, San Diego is much more laid back and prettier (in my opinion) than L.A.

If you need to be in L.A., I'd look into Torrance.

Thanks for the input! At this point, I just want to be in California! Hopefully one day I will be able to move to San Diego. Does anyone know of any good websites to use to search for apartments in those areas, other than rent.com or any of those? Overall do you all like LA? Deciding where to go is harder than I thought it would be!
