Just a comment, if you are going to dig tunnels you might as well put in a decent subway system, not tunnels for cars to drive through.

Just think of the number of people transiting through the tunnel per hour comparing autos and subway trains.

What's your opinion of Europe's Chunnel?

That is a ridiculous idea and then I would have to have seven cars instead of the three I currently have!

Perhaps more than that.

New roads are NOT the answer, but limiting the amount of vehicles on the roads, on any given day is the answer.
I have proposed this idea for years now, with no response from city, or state government, but one day it IS going to be the rule of law.

Very simply put, when a vehicle is registered at the dmv, a day of the week sticker would be issued as well, and this sticker would be placed on the lower right side of the windshield, much like inspection stickers in many states.
On the day designated by the sticker, you could not use the vehicle.
Obviously law enforcement, military, emergency vehicles, and medical would be exempt.

If caught driving the vehicle on the designated day it is to be off the streets, the fine would be $500.00
One would have to car pool, or take public transportation on the designated day of the sticker.

This sticker program would take millions of vehicles off the streets on any given day of the week.

In the early seventies, we had to ration gas, according to the sequence of numbers on the license plate.

None of us liked it, but we did it, and got use to it.
The same would apply to this sticker plan.

One day soon, it WILL happen, so best prepare for it.
There are just to many vehicles in this city, and state, and there is no money available for the mass construction of roads, and freeways that would be needed to handle the ever increasing flow of people to California.

When a Sunday afternoon trip that not many years ago too about an hour and a half, now takes, at minimum 4 to 6 hours or more, something is wrong.

Bob.
You are talking about road space rationing, it's used all over the world.

Los Angeles needs to use eminent domain to buy up houses along freeways so that they can be expanded. Give people 10 years to move out and pay them 1 1/4 times the value of their home.

That was the standard operating procedure for many years, if not in LA, in many places. Added lanes just attracted more traffic, aggravated by the displaced now having to drive further. Providing new rail service is the better way to go, giving people an alternative.
Someone mentioned the Chunnel, which has an auto-train like service. Don't know if that would work for short intra city routes.

This is a stupid idea no matter how you look at it. Oh yeah, I'll just put a helipad on my roof. (NOT) Not even if you can afford the helicopter and pilot.

Same for the tunnels. You need legal rights before you bore under residential and commercial property, probably city/county property too (even if they are on your side).

Stupid idea.
Two words.

Eminent domain.

You can take whatever you said and throw it out the window.

Really? Even with the white sheets obstructing their vision?

An idea so awful, only a Gump supporter could love it.

HaHa. True. The authoritarian streak in some Trump supporters is frightening. But the Donald thinks eminent domain is "wonderful" especially when it benefits him.

Helicopters are one of the most dangerous ways to commute. There was a concert promoter in northern California who went to various sites by helicopter which crashed and killed him.

The way the dmv could "fix" the multiple vehicle problem is to issue the same day sticker to all the vehicles registered to the same owner.

Bob.
