I'd appreciate any input from anyone who has to travel this route! The dreaded 405 South on a Friday! I'm trying to figure out how far in advance I need to leave tomorrow afternoon to compensate for traffic.

I'll be leaving from Playa del Rey/El Segundo, trying to get to Costa Mesa by 7pm on a Friday. Thank you!

Leave now. Just kidding.

I really don't know.. .I'd say it's 1-1.5 hours going north from Costa Mesa to El Segundo, don't know about south.

Traffic is unpredictable, and can really vary on any given Friday. I would plan for 1.5 to 2 hours to be on the safe side.

if you could do it in 1 hour, let me just say, that would be amazing. i used to go to long beach after work on fridays from my old apartment in PDR, it would take ATLEAST 45 minutes and thats barely over half way to Costa Mesa. I think that the 1.5 hours would be on the low end, especially considering what time you need to be down there at. I'd say leave at 5 just to play it safe.

If you're out by 2-2:30, you'll have a few hours to kill.If you leave by 3, you'll be there by 5. Most likely you'd even be OK if you left at 4, but it will be constant stop and go the whole distance and you never know . . .

I should add that I'll have a carpool dummy too! Is there a carpool lane all the way south on the 405?

Yeah that's not going to be fun. Its taken me 3+ hours to get from Northridge to Costa Mesa on a Friday afternoon. Figure at least an hour between Northridge and El Segundo. So 1.5-2 hours sounds about right for your leg of the voyage. The good news is that the 405 south goes pretty smoothly once you get into Orange County. If its something important you CAN'T be late for, I'd allow 2.5 hours. Sure beats stressing over traffic and being late.
