The downtown is actually noticeable cleaner than it was 10 years ago and just may become a destination in the near future. Some areas of Compton are being gentrified as well. Koreatown recovered nicely from the riots and Little Tokyo and Chinatown are booming with galleries.

LA is now the 3rd largest city economy in the WORLD behind Tokyo and New York. And it also safer now than it has been in decades. San Diego, a typically safe city, has a higher per capita crime rate than LA. That's how far LA has come. The air pollution is still bad, but it's also cleaner than it's ever been in recent memory. Much better than in the 70s.

So it answer the original question, it's absolutely NOT going down the toilet.

We've accomplished cleaner air, lower crime, gentrified riot-stricken neighborhoods. Yeah, there is traffic, overcrowding, poor schools, socioeconomic divide, but you cannot ignore the strides that LA has taken in other areas.

And it's true that life is probably a lot simpler and easier in AZ, UT, CO, ID, but I disagree about opportunities. The job market there is not as varied as in Southern California. Even scoping out Craigslists, the job listing in Socal are infinitely more than in those states.

I love L.A and I will always defend this place from all the haters out there.

LA is fantastic. People don't realize how much they have in Los Angeles that are taken for granted.

Are you sure you don't work for the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, from Kern County? Hey, you're not using a graphical emoticon this time. What's up, man?

Yes LA does have gang problems, the freeways are emotionally challenging, and oh yes there's also crime, but then again what city that is LA's size doesn't have these issues? BTW, LA's overall crime rate is lower than that of Chicago and Atlanta, that's something to think about.

On the other hand though, you have some of the world's top universities, cultural sites such as the Getty center, and everything in between, all in one city, it's virtually impossible to get bored here.

I could move to Arizona or Texas, or whatever, but I would be leaving behind the opportunities available here, and that's a price I'm not willing to pay.

1) Illegal Immigration is not just an L.A problem, but a National One.

2) Their is traffic in every major city.

3) L.A's Crime Rate is pretty good for a city it's size.

4) If you like rain you should move to the Pacific Northwest.
