Variances exist so that an undue and unforeseen hardship can be overcome. For example, if a freeway is constructed next to a person's home, a variance for a sound retention wall that exceeds the normal height limit can be sough in order to stop noise that did not exist when the homeowner originally purchased their home.

Variances do NOT(!!!) exist so that developers can simply circumvent zoning laws, which makes a mockery of zoning laws altogether and is a very poor practice that has been occurring for far too long, as a result of the rampant corruption that plagues city government.

Measure S was a stop-gap measure that attempted to put the brakes on a portion this city's corruption, but unfortunately, the naivety of the L.A. electorate reigned supreme once again at the ballot box. L.A. was given a gift on a silver platter and once again the people of this city have thrown it away as a result of greed, envy, arrogance, and ignorance.

No, LA was given a horribly constructed measure created by a bunch of crybabies who misused millions of dollars in AIDS research donations. The planning process needed reform, but not with such a bad measure. Good thing folks knew how to research these things and didn't fall for the blatant lies that the Yes campaign threw out there.

2 year stop on all development? That would have been a disaster..
The measure was throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It was a goft from a millionaire to himself with money meant for healthcare.

Measure S did not attempt to stop any correctly conforming developments or anything not ridiculously large and overbearing on already existing neighborhoods to my knowledge. BTW, have you seen the monstrosity by LMU? It houses around as many people as the Death Star, so why do we need more of that sort of thing when we do not have the transportation infrastructure to support more people?

Did you honestly think Garcetti was NOT going to win?

The backlash against Trump and his stupidity has a massively negative impact on the GOP. If anything the election of Trump has finally destroyed the Republican party. 2018 even with it's gerrymandering is looking very bleak for Republicans.

California will become even more blue once Issa loses his seat which is inevitable considering he barely squeaked by in the last election. Orange County is more blue these days and you're seeing more Democrats moving out to Redder areas like the San Joaquin Valley, Sacramento Valley and Ventura.

The "backlash" is mostly fabricated by the media . The media is blatantly liberal and sensationizes every little thing .
The reality is that more people that didn't vote Republican before voted for Trump this election cycle . Aka Democrats and those that had voted for Obama .

Dems today have pretty much nothing to offer but identity politics , cries of "racism" and being pro illegal immigrant .

The focus needs to be on the economy and crime reduction .

The thing that I wonder when I see these threads is what did the folks so opposed to Garcetti actually do to get their candidate elected? Did you phone bank or canvass neighborhoods or did you donate to your candidate's campaign?
