Most who join gangs don't have a mentor to look up to and give them guidance. Unfirtunately, most people wopule rather complain about the gang problem than take an hour or two out of their week to mentor one of these kids. Not all of them can be "saved" this way but a good number could. Enoughto make it worth society's while.

jamiel shaw's assailant illegal!
Pedro Espinoza, illegal alien gang member kills Jamiel Shaw - Video Spider.tv
i heard in another report that when he was "interviewed" about his immigration status while in jail, he was "uncooperative" and told authorities that he didn't know where he was born. apparently, no one thought that rather dubious claim was worth investigating. had they done so, he could have been placed on an immigration hold pending deportation instead of being released from jail the day before he murdered jamiel.
that is just disgusting!

Btw, the racism I'm referring to is the way the media covers these events. Why are they all of a sudden no longer identifyingthe area where he got shot as near the Beverly Center? Because the powers that be want the tourists and people (predominatly white) who are able to pay the high taxes for that area to feel like they are safe and these shootings only happen in ethnic neighborhoods.

I heard he was shot in an area called Arlington Heights, from other news reports...it said 2100 5th Avenue...which appears to be above Crenshaw...is this area Arlington Heights? From the news reports, it sounded like he lived in a middle class primarily black neighborhood...am I to understand that the local LA media has made this up...that he was actually shot in front of a touristy area?

It's funny because most gang bangers and drug dealers have CARS. There's *nothing* cool about public transportation to them.
I've never heard of anyone doing a drive-by out the window of a passing bus or Blue Line train.

this is so true! drug dealers sell drugs to have money. they are much more likely to be driving a car then riding the $1.25 train, not to say they dont take public transportation, but they have a much better chance of being seen by 50 people then if they were in a car....

everything i read said that he was shot near his home, close enough for his father to hear the shots from inside the house. if there were news reports that claimed otherwise, they must have been mistaken. i find that the news often gets details wrong in the early reporting of any incident, so it's not all that surprising that they might have mistaken the place from which he was coming home for the scene of the crime.
2100 5th avenue is just north of I-10, near arlington avenue. a close relative of mine lives on the same street, south of the freeway. that's a pretty frightening discovery for me, actually. the disturbing details of this case just keep on comin'!

I stand corrected
I've heard that he was shot in Arlington Hieghts. I'm also watching the news as I type this, and they just HAD to label that area "Blood territory". I don't understand why the media is hellbent on labelling Black areas as gang areas. Not all are. My Godmother lived in that area for over 10 years and where Shaw was shot isn't a gang area. Sadly, there is a pocket of gang activity several blocks from where the shooting took place. But that's a small area compared to the rest of Arlington Heights and West Adams (just down the street) which has beautiful, huge historical homes.

Honestly, I don't know...I have a great fascination with Los Angeles...and until I actually see it in my own two eyes...I just have to rely on the LA media via the web, wikipedia, and this site...I don't know exactly what the nice neighborhoods are and what aren't...I do know that here in North Texas...gangs exist even in "nicer" towns...such as Richardson...According to wikipedia...it is the 5th safest city in Texas...and it is considered diverse and affluent...however...I have heard of gunshots there and what could be perceived as "gang activity"...they're everywhere...and until we allow make sure we can get our governments to pump money into the police to eradicate them...it seems our cities are going to be held hostage to an extent by their presence...
