I have friend planning a family vacation in Cali. What cities or nice/safe areas would you recommend for a hotel that is not in downtown LA but close enough to visit all the major sites?

His budget is $150-$200 per night. I'm thinking North west of LA since South LA county isn't very pretty..

Northwest LA is a no. Too far. Woodland Hills and Chatsworth Northridge are far and too hot. and 405 the freeway is too congested. Look into Bel Air or Beverly Hills. Very nice and safe hotels.

Manhattan Beach Ayres is a nice Hotel, usually in the $200.00 range. Close to LAX, Manhattan and Redondo Beach, easy drive to Marina Del Rey and Santa Monica etc. Not to bad to get the Hollywood and BH at off peak times.

Ramada Plaza West Hollywood might just sneak in under $200/night.

What's wrong with hotels in downtown? There are plenty of nice hotels downtown, in Hollywood, west Hollywood and all of the places op mentioned that are in perfectly safe areas
