Real watermen/women spend 90+% of their water time locally.

Posers spend more time afar.

On the socal beaches, if you're the type that dips your toes in its great. Sunny weather, warm sand.. The water is not the warmest or cleanest (Hyperion area especially), so if you want to go all in, it may be worth the trip to go elsewhere. Scuba is nice in Catalina and at some offshore spots, but you want a wetsuit. The water never gets truly warm here, remember the current flows southward from Alaska. I have tried beach diving in CA and its no fun, you need to boat out to a spot.

Its good to go somewhere where there's not much congestion, pollution, noise and traffic. Not all beaches are created equally. You try and go to Huntington Beach, Santa Monica, Redondo Beach on a typical weekend versus going to Pismo Beach it's a big difference.

I think the enjoyment value goes up if you go to a less crowded beach. My favorite time on the beach was in Belize a few years ago.

How about Laguna Beach? Does that count as one of best beaches in Los Angeles area?

Do any of you seek out Laguna Beach? Laguna Beach seems to be one of the only beaches in the area with attractive vegetation, rocky cliffs, rocks.

And it's not so extremely wide and barren like some of other LA beaches - more attractive in its scale and vegetation.

Are there any other beaches in Los Angeles area that have vegetation and rocks like Laguna Beach has?

So many of the Los Angeles beaches are extremely wide, very barren beaches - like Huntington Beach.

And Pismo Beach? What is your opinion of it? (I have not seen it)
