The runway issue has not changed and is overblown, IMHO. I landed a DC-3 there when I was in flight training in San Diego and it was a piece of cake.

A DC-3 there? Really?

Do they still have the free round trip ride on your birthday on the Catalina Express? I took advantage of that offer last year. I just made reservations on their website.

Would I kid you?

Supplies were routinely ferried to Catalina via DC-3's. That's why my instructor had me land there when I was getting my type rating.

I have been to Catalina Island probably over 30-40 times. I mainly go for scuba diving at Casino Point. I go out of Long Beach. For overnight stays, I stay at Seaport Village Inn, as they are tailored for scuba divers and will drop and pick up divers from Casino Point.

As for getting sea sick, unless you are very sensitive, traveling on the Catalina Express will not be an issue. I do get sea sick, but never got sick on the Express. I only need dramamine for the smaller dive boats.

I have some friends that went ziplining and enjoyed it as well as snorkling in Casino Point. It's not for everyone, but it is a not little break away from the normal SoCal.

Thank you! I don't get sea sick at all, my worst problem is asthma in the valley here. I would rather be out on the open water than here in the polluted air!

I've been to Catalina twice. The first visit was to Avalon about 40 years ago when I was 10 years old. The second visit was two years ago to Two Harbors and involved a three night stay at the Banning House. I would highly recommend Two Harbors, which is more laid back and rustic. The Banning House is a bed and breakfast inn located on a hill with views of Two Harbor and Cat Harbor. Catalina Express has several trips daily between Two Harbors and San Pedro. The boat ride over was a little choppy, but I brought along plenty of ginger chews to mitigate against motion sickness. The return to San Pedro was much smoother.

One day I took a 16-mile hike along the Trans-Catalina Trail (TCT) over to Parsons Landing, a primitive oceanfront campsite. Beautiful beaches and vistas. I saw bison and Catalina foxes along the trail. I had an opportunity to snorkel and free dive in the clear waters. It was hard to believe that the Southern California mainland was 26 miles away. It was one of the best vacations I've had in recent years.

You're welcome. I meant to type, nice little break, instead of not little break.

Your asthma will thank you heading out to Catalina. Portofino restaurant and Steve's steakhouse in Avalon are both nice places to eat.

Went camping on the Two Harbor sides a few years ago. It was great. Almost got gored by a bison who wouldn't budge from the hiking trail on the way out to the campsite but we were the only ones there the first night so got to camp on the beach and have the entire side of the island to ourselves and had two bald eagles following us for about an hour on the hike back. No interest in Avalon personally as it doesn't offer anything that I couldn't get in another beach town without having to take the ferry ride
