CD,

What is the best I could hope for in LA on 3k/month rent in terms of apartment size and areas in LA?

Anywhere except right by the beach and maybe the Westside.

$3k is a heathy budget for an apartment.

How many bedrooms do you need? Where will you be working? What are you looking for in a neighborhood?

As John said, $3k gets you a nice 1br just about anywhere accept next to the beach. For example have a killer 1br in a new building in DTLA, which has 5 star amenities for a bit over $3k.

It can also get you a basic (not luxury or latest renovation) two bedroom in fairly desirable areas. Places like West LA, Brentwood, Hollywood, West Hollywood, Culver City.

Studios in Santa Monica START at 3000 now.

Ummm...I had a 1 bed 1.5 bath for 3050 a month in MDR--stainless steel appliances, gym, steam room, parking garage, etc. You can totally find a nice, luxury 1 bedroom on the Westside or near the beach for that amount. You just have to look.

Only need 1br.

I work from home.

I'm looking for safety, and proximity to places to shop for things for the house, eat, etc.

How big of a difference would 4k make?

I have to 2nd this. When I thought I would get a job offer in the South Bay (I didn't LOL...ended up getting a job right near my parents'). I looked to see how much living at the beach would cost (not like beach views, but within a few blocks of a beach). Found 1b1b (not studios) for $2000. Granted these are basic apartments and most didn't have parking either. They are out there but granted they get snatched right away. My apartment here in San Diego was sort of like that. You need to put your application in, pay the fee, get your credit report done even before you see the apartment just so you could be the 1st one.

That's more than my mortgage and I'm a new homeowner.

You'll be fine almost everywhere. You might even be able to get a room on the beach for that but it wouldn't be worth it as it would most likely be ridiculously small.

Where in MDR? Sounds like R2 or one of those. Not exactly on the beach.
