i have a feeling that this is going to be moved to the los angeles board but i totally agree with you! the problem is, as widespread as los angeles is, its public rail system is not as efficient as other cities with established city cores

I would say Los Angeles has found itself needing mass transportation infinately more than possibly any city on earth right now. Real trouble.

LA has the worst public transportation system in any major city I've ever lived in (Madrid, Washington D.C. and Munich) LA has a laughable rail network and buses are caught up in the same traffic as the rest of us.

Gee, you'd think a city this rich would have some advance public transportation network. Something must be done and fast. They can start by increasing the amount of metros and buses that run by having one every 10mins intervals?

The problem with mass transit in LA is that so many residents have it ingrained in their heads that a subway/light rail system would never work here. They can't possibly imagine the prospect of giving up their cars for even the most basic trips. Many of these people have never lived anywhere else and have negative images of public transportation due to their pro-automobile bias. They can't comprehend the fact that in places like New York, DC, and all of Europe, people of all social classes use mass transportation, not just those who can't afford a car. The problem with LA and cities like it, is that mass transportation has gained the reputation of being the realm of the poor, working class, and other "undesirables".

Angelenos will make up a million excuses why they don't want to try mass transit: it's dirty, you have to sit next to stranger, it takes too long, I can't listen to my music (ever heard of an iPod?), LA's not New York, it's not trendy enough, I'd rather cruise in my hot ride, Britney Spears doesn't ride the bus.

Of course, many of these people who say such things then go on to criticize George Bush for not being concerned enough for the environment, while their over-sized vehicles spew out a constant stream of pollution.

Can you provide any suggestions that are effective, won't cost tens of billions of dollars and can be accomplished in three years? I can, but they will only satisfy two of those three constraints (you pick any two).

Its really quite simple, you make it reliable and run frequent enough to gauge the confidence of the public, they will come. I have lived in the uk long enough to know for myself that this form of system, works. Its not 100% perfect by any means, accidents sometimes happen but 85% of the time its like clockwork.

If gas gets progressively expensive, then im pretty sure people will take serious considerations regarding public transport??

It will be an investment for sure and money will be needed but the foundations (infrastructure) are already there, like i said previosly, need more of the metros and buses,

Here a nice gift idea for the transit-hating commuters we all know so well:
