It may stll be worth it to pay $40 or 3% to get the reward points if you're so close to having enough points for a reward flight and can wait a month to book. Or if you need to spend say $5000 in the first 3 months to get an obscene amount of points and your time is almost up. But generally, it's not worth it to pay extra to use your cc to pay rent.

I would be charged a "service fee" of $37 if I used a credit or debit card, which would push my rent from $1,763.61 to $1,800.61. That's 2.06%, and it's ridiculous. No thank you! Instead, I just have my rent deducted from my bank account. This can be automated, but I prefer to take care of it myself every month. I figure if something happens, I don't want to be dead in my apartment longer than a month or five weeks. (My family would check on me long before then, but still...!)

At best, you're gonna get 2% rewards (and if you're so low on cash you can't afford rent, I'm going to take a wild guess and assume your FICO scores aren't exactly qualifying you for the best cards).

You're gonna be 3% off the top just to do it, and because you're planning on doing it because funds are tight, that means you're going to be carrying over interest month to month. Which means if your rent is $2,000, you're actually paying $2,060 off the top. Then (again, because I'm going to assume you're not exactly rocking a Chase Sapphire Reserve or a Fidelity Awards or something), you're going to be paying, what, 15? 20% interest on your carryover? I guess if you really want to be the guy paying way more for his apartment than anyone else, that's a good idea, but otherwise what you have is either a spending problem or a revenue problem that should be addressed. Letting the debt industry get their hooks in you isn't the answer - you'll basically never get out.
^^^^^ This guy gets it.

Paying rent with credit card is dumb/stupid/insane.

I haven't found a place that will do it for free yet so it's never worth it to try and do it for points or whatever.

My partner and I pay our rent on our credit card as well as few of our friends rent, we do play the points game so it's the easiest way to hit the spends and get those sign up bonuses on all our new cards without spending money we don't have. We use Plastiq.com and I think they charge 3% which to us is totally worth it considering the amount of free travel we get. We obviously pay it off every month so we aren't racking up any debt doing this.

Which is the same as using your bank account. Which is not an option for OP, apparently.

Better than getting an installment loan from one of these scumbag companies. Triple digit interest rates!

Borrow $5,000, repay $42,000

Also better than diving head-first off a freeway overpass. What's your point?
